George Burton (bishop)
George Crompton Ambrose Burton (7 June 1852 – 8 February 1931) was an English prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Bishop of Clifton from 1902 to 1931. Born in Kingston upon Hull on 28 April 1856, he was ordained to the priesthood on 31 May 1890. He was appointed the Bishop of the Diocese of Clifton by the Holy See on 15 March 1902. The Reverend George Burton (1717–1791) was an English clergyman and chronologer. Life Burton was the second son of George Burton (1685-1758), who held the manor of Burton Lazars in Leicestershire and in 1710 served as High Sheriff of Leicestershire, and his wife Elizabeth Champion (1683-1739). His elder brother was Philip Burton (1710-1792), a lawyer and writer who inherited the family landholdings and by marrying Felicia Whitfield (1713-1791) became the father of Felicia Elizabetha Burton (1741-1821), the wife of George Horne, Bishop of Norwich. He was born in 1717, and received his education at Catharine Hall, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1736, and M.A. in 1740, by the latter date having become a member of King's College, Cambridge. George Burton (1 May 1851 – 7 May 1930) was an English cricketer. He was born at Hampstead, London and dies at Covent Garden. He began in North London club cricket, before appearing with the Middlesex Colts in 1875. He made his first-class cricket debut for Middlesex County Cricket Club in 1881 and played in 111 matches until 1893. From 1883 until 1904 he was a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) groundstaff and appeared in several matches between 1883 and 1892. He took 608 wickets at an average of 17.18, with a personal best of 10/59. George Burton was a rugby union international who represented England from 1879 to 1881. Early life George Burton was born on 29 August 1855 in Wakefield. He attended Winchester College. Rugby union career Burton made his international debut on 10 March 1879 at Edinburgh in the Scotland vs England match. He was considered a very fast and "brilliant player" when the ball was in the open. A good friend of Arthur Budd, he was similar in style in that he was known to do little work in the scrummage itself, but contributed significantly to their club, Blackheath FC and England.
