George Basalla
George Basalla (born 1928 in Altoona, Pennsylvania) is an American history of science, historian of science and emeritus, professor emeritus at the University of Delaware. Education and career Basalla completed his Ph.D. in the history of science at Harvard University in 1963. His dissertation, ''Science and Government in England 1800–1870'', was supervised by I. Bernard Cohen. He became an assistant professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin in 1964, and was appointed as an associate professor at the University of Delaware in 1971. He retired to become a professor emeritus in 1999. Altoona is a city in Blair County, Pennsylvania. It is the principal city of the Altoona Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The population was 43,963 at the time of the 2020 Census, making it the eighteenth most populous city in Pennsylvania. The history of science covers the development of science from ancient times to the present. It encompasses all three major branches of science: natural, social, and formal. Science's earliest roots can be traced to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia around 3000 to 1200 BCE. These civilizations' contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and medicine influenced later Greek natural philosophy of classical antiquity, wherein formal attempts were made to provide explanations of events in the physical world based on natural causes.
