George And Margaret (film)
''George and Margaret'' is a 1940 British comedy film directed by George King and starring Marie Lohr, Judy Kelly and Noel Howlett.Goble p.775 It is based on the Gerald Savory's 1937 play of the same name by Gerald Savory, which had run for over three hundred performances in the West End. The film was made at Teddington Studios by the British subsidiary of Warner Brothers. The sets were designed by the art director Norman G. Arnold. Unlike a number of the company's films from the era, which are now considered lost, this still survives. Synopsis The plot revolves around the sudden and unexpected visit for dinner of George and Margaret, a couple returning from British India to visit their upper-middle class friends in Hampstead. George King (film Director)
George King (1899 – 26 June 1966) was an English actors' agent, film director, producer and screenplay writer. He is associated with the production of quota quickies. He helmed several of Tod Slaughter's melodramas, including 1936's '' The Demon Barber of Fleet Street''. Career King entered into the film industry after completion of medical studies. His first film ''Too Many Crooks'' featured a young stage actor named Laurence Olivier, also making his film debut. Once launched from routine thrillers, King made the usual array of lightweight comedies, romances and thrillers. With the outbreak of war, King directed some distinctly up-market war movies, most successful of which was ''Candlelight in Algeria'', a vehicle for James Mason. He was also successful with 1947's ''The Shop at Sly Corner'', which introduced Diana Dors, featuring a charismatic performance by Oscar Homolka and a notable performance by Kenneth Griffith. Gus McNaughton
Gus McNaughton (29 July 1881 – 18 November 1969), also known as Augustus Le Clerq and Augustus Howard, was an English film actor. He appeared in 70 films between 1930 and 1947. He was born in London and died in Castor, Cambridgeshire. He is sometimes credited as Gus MacNaughton. He appeared on stage from 1899, as a juvenile comedian with the Fred Karno company, the influential British music hall troupe. In films, McNaughton was often cast as the "fast-talking sidekick", and he appeared in several popular George Formby comedies of the 1930s and 1940s. Irene Handl (27 December 1901 – 29 November 1987) was a British author and character actress who appeared in more than 100 British films. Life Irene Handl was born in Maida Vale, London, the younger of two daughters of an Austria-born father -- who came to England via Switzerland and started as a bank clerk working his way up into the stock exchange as a stockbroker, then became a private banker -- Friedrich (later Frederick) Handl (1874–1961), who became a naturalised British subject. Her German mother, Marie ( Schiepp or Schuepp; 1875–before 1924), was also a naturalised British subject. Oliver Wakefield (29 May 1909 – 30 June 1956) was a popular British actor and comedian, born in South Africa, who was active from the 1930s until his death in 1956. Often billed as "The Voice of Inexperience", Wakefield is best known for his idiosyncratic satirical monologues.
