George Albert Harris
George Albert Harris, also known as George Harris (1913–1991), was an American painter, muralist, lithographer, and educator. He was a participant in the WPA Federal Art Project and was among the youngest artists on the mural project at Coit Tower. Harris' style is California Modernism, often working in abstraction, focusing primarily on still lifes and portraits. Biography Harris was born in San Francisco on January 24, 1913 and pursued a career in music before beginning his art studies at the California School of Fine Arts (now called San Francisco Art Institute) in 1929, after which he traveled and studied in Mexico and Europe. Harris’s 1934 Coit Tower mural called "Banking and Law" depicting the professions of banking and law, is memorable for its commentary on the economic conditions of the time. The Library of Congress (LOC) is the research library that officially serves the United States Congress and is the ''de facto'' national library of the United States. It is the oldest federal cultural institution in the country. The Treasury Section of Painting and Sculpture was a New Deal art project established on October 16, 1934, and administered by the Procurement Division of the United States Department of the Treasury. Commonly known as the Section, it was renamed the Section of Fine Arts in 1939. Its primary mission was the embellishment of public buildings — including many United States post offices — through site-specific murals and sculptures commissioned on a competitive basis. The program all but ceased to operate in 1942, and was officially terminated on July 15, 1943. The Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) was a New Deal program designed to employ artists that operated from 1933 to 1934. The program was headed by Edward Bruce, under the United States Treasury Department with funding from the Civil Works Administration. The PWAP served as way to employ artists, while having competent representatives of the profession display their work in a public setting.''provided by John R.
