George Adams (basketball)
George Adams (born May 15, 1949) is an American former professional basketball player. Born in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, Adams played college basketball for the Gardner–Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. He is the leading scorer and rebounder in program history. Adams played alongside Artis Gilmore during the 1968–69 season; Bulldogs head coach Eddie Holbrook considered Adams and Gilmore as "two of the hardest-working players eever coached." Adams was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the third round of the 1972 NBA draft. He spent his playing career with the San Diego Conquistadors of the American Basketball Association (ABA) where he was coached by Wilt Chamberlain and K. C. Jones. Kings Mountain, North Carolina
Kings Mountain is a small suburban city within the Charlotte metropolitan area in Cleveland and Gaston counties, North Carolina, United States. Most of the city is in Cleveland County, with a small eastern portion in Gaston County. The population was 10,296 at the 2010 census. During the Revolutionary War, Patriot militia defeated Loyalist militia in the Battle of Kings Mountain. History Originally the settlement was called White Plains, but the city was incorporated on October 16, 1874, and the name was changed. It was decided that "Kings Mountain" would be a more appropriate name since the community was close to the site of the historic 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain in York County, South Carolina, a turning point in the American Revolutionary War. 1974–75 San Diego Conquistadors Season
The 1974–75 San Diego Conquistadors season was the 3rd and final season of the Conquistadors in the American Basketball Association. The team floundered, on the court and in the box office, with Wilt Chamberlain having left the team after the previous season. They finished 5th in points per game at 109.9, but dead last in points allowed at 115.5 per game. Notably, they played the New York Nets in a 4 overtime game on February 14, winning 176–166. A victory over Virginia on March 12 turned out to be their last as they lost 11 straight games to end the season, as they finished in dead last by 7 games. After the season, Frank Goldberg (who formerly held ownership interest in the Denver Nuggets) bought the San Diego Conquistadors, assuming the $2 million team debt. 1973–74 San Diego Conquistadors Season
The 1973–74 American Basketball Association season saw the San Diego Conquistadors acquire Wilt Chamberlain as a player and coach, finish tied for fourth place in the ABA's Western Division, defeat the Denver Rockets in a one-game playoff for that spot and then bow out to the Utah Stars 4 games to 2 in the Western Division Semifinals. The 1972–73 San Diego Conquistadors season was the 1st season of the San Diego Conquistadors in the American Basketball Association. The Conquistadors were the first and only expansion team of the ABA, made to make the league have 10 teams, with Dr. Leonard Bloom granted a team for $1 million. But a feud with Peter Graham, proprietor of the San Diego Sports Arena due to Graham being bitter for not being granted the team meant that the team would play their games in the 3,200 capacity Peterson Gym. The first game was a Friday night on October 13, 1972 versus the Denver Rockets, which they lost 100–109. The Conquistadors had a 16–26 first half of the season, with a ten-game losing streak in that half. In the second half, they went 21–21, with a nine-game losing streak in there, though they have a five-game winning streak near the end of the season that rose their win total from 25 to 30.
