George Abercromby, 3rd Baron Abercromby
George Ralph Campbell Abercromby, 3rd Baron Abercromby (30 May 1800 – 25 June 1852) was a Scottish soldier, politician and peer. The son of George Abercromby, 2nd Baron Abercromby and Montague Dundas, on his death in 1852 he was succeeded in the barony by his eldest son. Career He was commissioned into the 51st Foot. In 1817 he purchased a lieutenancy in the 3rd Foot Guards and in 1818 exchanged into the 3rd Dragoon Guards as a cornet. In 1821 he purchased a lieutenancy in the regiment and in 1822 he purchased a captaincy in the 12th Light Dragoons. By 1828 he was back in the 3rd Dragoon Guards as a major and in that year he purchased an unattached infantry Lieutenant-colonelcy. By 1842 he was a colonel and in that year he exchanged into the Coldstream Guards as a lieutenant-colonel. ''The Right Honourable'' ( abbreviation: ''Rt Hon.'' or variations) is an honorific style traditionally applied to certain persons and collective bodies in the United Kingdom, the former British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations. Coldstream Guards
The Coldstream Guards is the oldest continuously serving regular regiment in the British Army. As part of the Household Division, one of its principal roles is the protection of the monarchy; due to this, it often participates in state ceremonial occasions. The Regiment has consistently provided formations on deployments around the world and has fought in the majority of the major conflicts in which the British Army has been engaged. The Regiment has been in continuous service and has never been amalgamated. It was formed in 1650 as 'Monck's Regiment of Foot' and was then renamed 'The Lord General's Regiment of Foot Guards' after the restoration in 1660. With Monck's death in 1670 it was again renamed 'The Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards' after the location in Scotland from which it marched to help restore the monarchy in 1660. Robert I (11 July 1274 – 7 June 1329), popularly known as Robert the Bruce (Scottish Gaelic: ''Raibeart an Bruis''), was King of Scots from 1306 to his death in 1329. One of the most renowned warriors of his generation, Robert eventually led Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence against England. He fought successfully during his reign to regain Scotland's place as an independent kingdom and is now revered in Scotland as a national hero. Ralph Abercromby (meteorologist)
Ralph Abercromby (11 February 1842 – 21 June 1897) was a Scottish meteorologist. Abercromby was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, the youngest son of the third Lord Abercromby. His mother, Louisa Penuel Forbes, was a daughter of Lord Medwyn. His obituary in ''Nature'' summarises his ancestry, "Several of his immediate relatives had been eminently distinguished. His great-grandfather, Sir Ralph Abercromby, who died in 1801, in the moment of victory, at the Battle of Alexandria, had served his country with brilliant distinction, in the West Indies (Trinidad) and at the Helder." He himself served in the British Army from 1860 to 1869 and was stationed in Quebec. Ralph Abercromby is noted for his contributions to meteorology, his travels producing reports in ''Seas and skies in many latitudes'' such as weather and telegraphy at the US signals office. George Frederick Boyle, 6th Earl of Glasgow (9 October 1825 – 23 April 1890), was a Scottish nobleman. He was the son of George Boyle, 4th Earl of Glasgow, and Julia Sinclair, daughter of Sir John Sinclair, 1st Baronet. In February 1847, Boyle traveled with Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, to Skibbereen in County Cork to try and aid victims of the Irish Famine. Lord Dufferin left a memoir of their journey entitled '' Narrative of a Journey from Oxford to Skibbereen during the Year of the Irish Famine'' published in 1847 (27 pages). He married Hon. Montague Abercromby (1835–1931), daughter of George Abercromby, 3rd Baron Abercromby, and Louisa Penuel Forbes, on 29 April 1856. John Hay Forbes
John Hay Forbes, Lord Medwyn (19 September 1776 – 25 July 1854) was a British judge. Life Forbes was born in Edinburgh on 19 September 1776 the second son of Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet, and his wife Elizabeth Hay. He studied law at Edinburgh University and was admitted to the Scottish Bar as an advocate in 1799. He was appointed Sheriff Depute of Perthshire in 1807, and was made Lord of Session in January 1825, when he assumed the courtesy title of Lord Medwyn, from his estate in Perthshire. In the 1830s he is listed as living at 17 Ainslie Place on the Moray Estate in the west end of Edinburgh. In December 1830 he was made a Lord of Justiciary. He resigned that appointment in May 1849, retired from the bench in October 1852, and died in Edinburgh, 25 July 1854.
