George A. Crawford
George Addison Crawford (July 27, 1827 – January 26, 1891) was an American politician, lawyer and journalist. Crawford was born in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Jefferson College (now Washington & Jefferson College) in 1847. Crawford was a delegate to the Pennsylvania Democratic State Convention in 1855. In 1857, along with Norman Eddy and others, he purchased and founded the city of Fort Scott, Kansas. He was elected governor of Kansas in 1861; however the election was declared illegal before he could assume the post. In 1871, he was appointed commissioner to the Centennial Exposition by Ulysses S. Grant. He was also the city founder of Grand Junction, Colorado (incorporated July 22, 1882). where he died and was buried. Clinton County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 37,450. Its county seat is Lock Haven. The county was created on June 21, 1839, from parts of Centre and Lycoming Counties. Its name is in honor of the seventh Governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton. Some alternate sources suggest the namesake is Henry Clinton. The Kansas Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the state of Kansas and one of two major parties in the state, alongside the Republicans. The chair of the party is Vicki Hiatt. The party currently controls the state's governorship, lieutenant governorship and Treasurer office, as well as one seat in the state's U.S. House delegation. Washington & Jefferson College (W&J College or W&J) is a private liberal arts college in Washington, Pennsylvania. The college traces its origin to three log cabin colleges in Washington County established by three Presbyterian missionaries to the American frontier in the 1780s: John McMillan, Thaddeus Dod, and Joseph Smith.
