Georg Thieme
Georg Thieme (2 July 1860, Leipzig – 26 December 1925, Leipzig) was a German publisher, notable for founding the Georg Thieme Verlags in 1886 - it still operates as Thieme Medical Publishers. He was the son of the industrialist Alfred Thieme and elder brother of the art historian Ulrich Thieme. Leipzig ( , ; Upper Saxon: ) is the most populous city in the German state of Saxony. Leipzig's population of 605,407 inhabitants (1.1 million in the larger urban zone) as of 2021 places the city as Germany's eighth most populous, as well as the second most populous city in the area of the former East Germany after (East) Berlin. Alfred Thieme
Alfred Thieme (1830 – 1906) was a German industrialist and art collector from Leipzig. What little is known of his life was published in his art catalog, which was written by his son, the art historian Ulrich (known for Thieme-Becker) and the art historian Wilhelm von Bode. It was illustrated with engravings of artworks by Albert Krüger. He donated much of his collection, also known as the ''Thiemeschen Sammlung'', to the Museum der bildenden Künste. Thieme was also the father of Georg Thieme who founded a medical publishing business, today Thieme Medical Publishers. Ulrich Thieme
Ulrich Thieme (31 January 1865 in Leipzig – 25 March 1922 in Leipzig) was a German art historian. He was the son of the industrialist and art collector Alfred Thieme (1830–1906), brother of the publisher Georg Thieme (1830–1906) and grandfather of the painter Peter Flinsch (1920–2010). Edition Leipzig was a publisher in the German Democratic Republic (GDR/DDR), which, for the most part, placed books on Western markets as an export publisher. This was intended to serve representative purposes as well as to procure foreign currency. Today, the publishing house is part of the Seemann Henschel publishing group, which was taken over by in October 2017 with a program on regional and cultural history. From 1960 to 1984 more than book titles were published, of which more than 500 were published in foreign languages and about 60 even in multilingual versions. In the first phase, which lasted up to 1965, the publication of scientific and technical books predominated.
