Geoffrey Johnson-Smith
Sir Geoffrey Johnson-Smith, (16 April 1924 – 11 August 2010) was a British Conservative politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1959 to 2001, with only a brief interruption in the 1960s. He was also a television presenter. Early life and career The son of an electrical engineer, he joined the Royal Artillery straight from Charterhouse School in 1942 and after the war was demobilised as a captain. At Lincoln College, Oxford, he read PPE. Contemporaries remembered him as Oxford's best-dressed socialist, though he always insisted he never joined the Labour Party. In his final year he and Robin Day took part in a debating tour of United States run by the English-Speaking Union. From Oxford he joined the British Information Services, serving in San Francisco, where he met his wife, Jeanne, an American doctor whom he married in 1951. Rear Admiral Geoffrey Francis Smith (born 16 May 1950) is a retired officer of the Royal Australian Navy. After retiring from a 37-year naval career, Smith was appointed CEO of Sydney Ferries until his dismissal over allegations of misuse of his corporate credit card. Investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in 2009, Smith was found by the commission to have engaged in corrupt conduct. The case was referred to the Department of Public Prosecutions, and he was jailed for up to two years after pleading guilty before the District Court of New South Wales to one charge of cheating or defrauding Sydney Ferries. The English Surgeon
''The English Surgeon'' is a documentary film that premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2007. It focuses on the work of Henry Marsh, a neurosurgeon from the UK, and his efforts to help desperately ill patients in Ukrainian hospitals. Henry Marsh first went to Kyiv, Ukraine in 1992 to give lectures, and was appalled when he saw the medical system there. He states he was treating patients with medical complications that had not been seen in the United Kingdom for more than 60 or 70 years. When he offered his help, he was told that it would be nothing more than “a drop of water in the ocean” unless he changed the whole health care system. Deciding to do what he could, he started to train local doctors in surgical procedures, bringing equipment from the UK and performing surgery without charge. Geoffrey Denis Smith (23 March 1928 – 27 February 2009) was a professional gardener, broadcaster, writer and lecturer. Geoffrey Smith (born 1943, Michigan) is a British-based American radio presenter, author and former jazz percussionist. Smith was the regular presenter of BBC Radio 3's '' Jazz Record Requests'' for over twenty years and has also presented other programmes on the network. Biography Smith's father was a pianist who also played banjo in his local dance-band in Detroit. Smith's own active jazz career ended in 1969, discouraged by the rise of rock music. In 1973 he came to Britain to complete a PhD, where he began a new career as a freelance journalist and lecturer, contributing articles and reviews to '' Country Life'', ''New Society'' and ''The Spectator'' among others. Thomas Geoffrey Stuart Smith (called Geoffrey; surnamed Smith or Stuart-Smith; 28 February 19018 December 1981) was an Anglican bishop in the 20th century. Smith was educated at Felsted School; Jesus College, Cambridge; and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. He was ordained deacon in 1925, and Priest in 1926. He began his career with a curacy at St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey after which he was Chaplain of Ridley Hall, Cambridge.
