Geoffrey Kelley
Geoffrey Kelley (born February 17, 1955) is a Canadian politician, coach and teacher. He was a member of National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Jacques-Cartier in Montreal's West Island region from 1994 to 2018, representing the Quebec Liberal Party. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Kelley went to the Université de Montréal to study French courses and then obtained a diploma at John Abbott College. He would later obtain a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in modern history of Canada at McGill University. He was then a teacher at Commission scolaire du Lakeshore and a lecturer at various institutions including John Abbott College, Collège Marie-Victorin and McGill University. He was also the political aide for several cabinet ministers including the Minister of Education (1990), the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Public Security (1990–1994) and was a chief of staff of the Deputy Premier and the President of the Treasury Board (1994). 1998 Quebec General Election
The 1998 Quebec general election was held on November 30, 1998, to elect members of the National Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Parti Québécois, led by Premier Lucien Bouchard, won re-election, defeating the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Charest. After the narrow defeat of the PQ's proposal for political independence for Quebec in an economic union with the rest of Canada in the 1995 Quebec referendum, PQ leader Jacques Parizeau resigned. In January 1996, Bouchard left federal politics, where he was leader of the Bloc Québécois in the House of Commons of Canada, to lead the Parti Québécois and become premier. Jean Charest had also left federal politics, where he had been leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. 2018 Quebec General Election
The 2018 Quebec general election was held on October 1, 2018, to elect members to the National Assembly of Quebec. The election saw a landslide victory for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) led by François Legault, which won 74 of 125 seats, giving the party a majority and unseating the Quebec Liberal Party. The Liberals became the Official Opposition with 31 seats. This election was the first won by the CAQ, which had previously been the third party in the legislature. It was also the first since 1966 that had been won by a party other than the Liberals or Parti Québécois. Jean Charest
John James "Jean" Charest (; born June 24, 1958) is a Canadian lawyer and former politician who served as the 29th premier of Quebec from 2003 to 2012 and the fifth deputy prime minister of Canada in 1993. Charest was elected to the House of Commons in 1984 and would serve in several federal cabinet positions between 1986 and 1993. He became the leader of the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party in 1993 and remained in the role until he entered provincial politics in 1998. Charest was elected as the leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, and his party went on to form government in 2003. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Charest studied law and worked as a lawyer before he became a member of Parliament (MP) following the 1984 federal election.
