Geoemydidae
The Geoemydidae (formerly known as Bataguridae) are one of the largest and most diverse families in the order Testudines (turtles), with about 70 species. The family includes the Eurasian pond and river turtles and Neotropical wood turtles. Members of this family are commonly called Leaf turtle. Characteristics Geoemydidae are turtles of various sizes (from about in length) with often a high degree of sexual dimorphism. They usually have webbed toes, and their pelvic girdles articulate with their plastrons flexibly. Their necks are drawn back vertically. Their carapaces have 24 marginal scutes. The plastron is composed of 12 scutes and has no mesoplastron; the pectoral and abdominal scutes contact the marginal scutes. Some other features include a single articulation between the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae, the lack of a hyomandibular branch of the facial nerve, and an epipterygoid bone in the skull. Ecology Geoemydidae live in tropics and subtropics of Asia, Europe ...

Vijayachelys
__NOTOC__ The Cochin forest cane turtle (''Vijayachelys silvatica''), also known as Kavalai forest turtle, forest cane turtle or simply cane turtle, is a rare turtle from the Western Ghats of India. Described in 1912, its type locality is given as "Near Kavalai in the Cochin State Forests, inhabiting dense forest, at an elevation of about 1500 feet above sea level".Henderson (1912) Only two specimens were found at that time, and no scientist saw this turtle in the next 70 years. It was finally rediscovered in 1982, and since then a number of specimens have been found and some studies have been conducted about its affiliation and habits.Praschag et al. (2006) Like its relatives, it belongs to the subfamily Geoemydinae of the family Geoemydidae, formerly known as Bataguridae. It was once placed in the genus ''Geoemyda'' and subsequently moved to ''Heosemys''. But as it seems, the Cochin forest cane turtle forms a quite distinct lineage closely related to ''Melanochelys''. Thus, ...

Cyclemys
''Cyclemys'' is a genus of freshwater turtles, commonly referred to as Asian leaf turtles, from the family Geoemydidae. The genus occurs throughout Southeast and South Asia, and currently contains seven species. Asian leaf turtles average in length. They are mostly brown to greenish in color, with round to rectangular shells. Their carapaces bear a superficial resemblance to plant leaves, hence their common name. They can be found around shallow, slow-moving bodies of water in hilly forests. Adults are primarily terrestrial, though juveniles are more aquatic. Taxonomy and nomenclature ''Cyclemys'' turtles belong to the family Geoemydidae under the subfamily Geoemydinae. They were first described in 1834 by English zoologist Thomas Bell in his work ''A Monograph of the Testudinata''. ''Cyclemys'' and closely related genera ('' Cuora'', ''Pyxidea'', and ''Notochelys'') are believed to have diverged from a common ''Heosemys''-like ancestor. ''Cyclemys'' taxonomy and phylo ...

Siebenrockiella
''Siebenrockiella'' is a small genus of black marsh turtles. It used to be monotypic but now has two species with the addition of the Philippine forest turtle (moved from the genus ''Heosemys''). The genus was originally erected in 1869 by John Edward Gray under the name ''Bellia'', commemorating Thomas Bell, but this name is a junior homonym of '' Bellia'' Milne-Edwards, 1848, a crustacean genus. The replacement name, ''Siebenrockiella'', was published in 1929 by Wassili Adolfovitch Lindholm, and commemorates Friedrich Siebenrock. Pangshura
''Pangshura'' is a genus of geoemydid turtles endemic to South Asia. Its member species were formerly in the obsolete genus ''Kachuga''. A fifth member, ''Pangshura tatrotia'', was described in 2010, but it is only known from Pliocene fossils. 2 to 4 black blotches on each shield, which form a symmetrical pattern but one of each gular, anal, axillary and inguinal shields. Carapace olive green with small black spots, an orange or red band present on first three vertebral shields (Smith, 1931: Sharma, 1998). Habits and habitats: The species inhabits freshwater bodies with plenty of aquatic vegetation. Though entirely aquatic, the turtle is a poor swimmer. Usually few individuals are seen basking on logs on the standing water. Herbivorous, feeds chiefly on aquatic vegetation. The turtle has a peculiar defensive habit of retracting the head and forelimbs, everting the hindlimbs and pushing the shell forward till suitable shelter is reached. (Sharma, 1998: Das, 2002).
