Gentlemen Of The Press (play)
''Gentlemen of the Press'' is a three-act play written by Ward Morehouse. Producers Thomas E. Jackson and H. S. Kraft opened it on Broadway at Henry Miller's Theatre on August 27, 1928. George Abbott directed the production, which ran for 128 performances. The play is a comedy about Wick Snell, a journalist who decides to take a job as a publicist for a real estate firm. After a dispute with his new boss, Snell goes back to journalism. Morehouse was a journalist who had worked for several different newspapers. The main character in ''Gentlemen of the Press'' was inspired by one of his co-workers who frequently complained about the difficulties of working in journalism. Ward Morehouse
Ward Morehouse (November 24, 1895 – December 7, 1966) was an American theater critic, newspaper columnist, playwright, and author. Life and career Born in Savannah, Georgia, Ward Morehouse first worked as a reporter for ''The Savannah Press'' and ''The Atlanta Journal''. He arrived in New York City in 1919 and wrote for ''The New York Tribune'', and '' The Herald Tribune''. In 1926, he began writing the Broadway After Dark column for the ''New York Sun''. He remained at the ''Sun'' for 25 years where he was also a drama critic and roving correspondent. When the ''Sun'' stopped publishing in 1950, Morehouse continued writing "Broadway After Dark" until his death, first at the ''New York World-Telegram and Sun'', then for other papers and the General Features Syndicate. Morehouse, who was best known for his dynamic interviews with theater celebrities, organized his own theater company when he was a teenager. Millard Mitchell
Millard Mitchell (August 14, 1903 – October 13, 1953) was an American character actor whose credits include roughly 30 feature films and two television appearances. He appeared as a bit player in eight films between 1931 and 1936. Mitchell returned to film work in 1942 after a six-year absence. Between 1942 and 1953, he was a successful supporting actor. For his performance in the film ''My Six Convicts'' (1952), Mitchell won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. He is also remembered for his role as Col. Millard Webb (December 6, 1893 – April 21, 1935) was an American screenwriter and director who directed 20 films between 1920 and 1933. His best-known film is the 1926 silent John Barrymore adventure ''The Sea Beast (1926 film), The Sea Beast'', a version of ''Moby Dick'', costarring Dolores Costello. Webb also directed the early sound Florenz Ziegfeld produced talkie ''Glorifying the American Girl'' released by Paramount Pictures, Paramount in 1929. In 1927 he directed ''Naughty but Nice (1927 film), Naughty but Nice'', produced by John McCormick (producer), John McCormick and First National Pictures. His active years were from 1916 to 1933. He was married to Lydia Stocking (1918–1923). Mary Eaton married Webb in 1929, but they separated. ''Gentlemen of the Press'' is a 1929 all-talking American pre-Code film starring Walter Huston in his first feature film role, and Kay Francis and an uncredited Brian Donlevy in their film debuts. The film still survives. This film's copyright has expired, and it is now in the public domain. It survives in a copy sold to MCA for television distribution. The film is based on Ward Morehouse's 1928 Broadway play ''Gentlemen of the Press''. In the 1930 silent melodrama by Yasujirō Ozu, ''That Night's Wife'' (''Sono yo no tsuma''), a poster of this film is prominently displayed (Ozu, who had a "passionate love of American film", according to scholar David Bordwell, often featured in his films posters of movies he liked). Francis Pierlot
Francis Pierlot (July 15, 1875 – May 11, 1955) was a stage and film actor with over 90 film credits between 1914 and 1953. The Massachusetts-born actor's first film credit was in 1914, but he did not begin appearing in films full-time until 1940, when he was 63 years old. He specialized in playing grey-haired well dressed characters in small parts including judges, priests and lawyers. One of Pierlot's larger roles was as Jean Simmons' manservant in his final film, the biblical epic ''The Robe'' (1953). He died in Hollywood, California, at age 79. Duncan Penwarden
Duncan Penwarden (born William Duncan Penwarden; February 9, 1880 – September 13, 1930) was a Canadian-American film and stage actor. Penwarden was born in Mabou, British Nova Scotia, the eldest of seven siblings raised by English immigrants, Robert and Eva Penwarden. His father worked as a caretaker at a local newspaper office in Winnipeg where Duncan Pendwarden was raised before coming to America in his early twenties. Several years before his death, Penwarden applied to become a United States citizen, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1927. He died in 1930, and was survived by his Michigan-born wife, Gertrude, and their two sons.
