Gene Smith (born December 31, 1963) is an American football executive who served as the general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL) from 2009 to 2012. Early life and college Smith was born in Willard, Ohio. He attended Heidelberg College, serving as a captain of the football team while playing as a defensive lineman. From 1986 to 1988, Smith worked at Ohio University as a graduate assistant and later served as an assistant coach. He worked at Edinboro University from 1989 to 1994, serving as an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator, and strength and conditioning coordinator. NFL career Smith joined the Jaguars in 1994 as a college scout. He was promoted to director of college scouting in 2000, and then took on the role of Executive Director of College and Pro Personnel in January 2008. Deriot Eugene Smith (c. 1910 – April 6, 1987) was an American football and wrestling coach. He served as the head football coach at Central State College—now the University of Central Oklahoma—from 1950 and 1951, compiling a career college football record of 9–10, and one conference championship. He ranks 9th all-time for Broncho coaches in winning percentage, number of games coached and victories. Early life Smith was born in Hillsboro, Texas, and attended Central State Teachers College in Edmond, Oklahoma, and graduated in 1934, with math and science degrees. Central State Smith coached the Central State wrestling team from 1936 until 1939, and again in 1946–47 before the program's 25-year hiatus. He was an assistant coach for the CSC football team and filled in as head coach while Dale E. Hamilton served during the Korean War. Later life and death Smith moved to California in 1958. Gene Smith is an American college administrator and former college football player and coach who currently serves as senior vice president and Athletic Director for Ohio State University. He was named the university's eighth athletic director on March 5, 2005. Prior to his tenure at Ohio State, he served as athletic director for Arizona State, Eastern Michigan, and Iowa State. Early life/playing and coaching career A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Smith played defensive end for four years at Notre Dame including the 1973 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team that won the AP National Championship. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1977, becoming the first member of his family to graduate from college. A native of Key West, Florida, Smith made his Negro leagues debut in 1941 with the Jacksonville Red Caps.
