Gemma Hickey
Gemma Hickey (born October 1, 1976) is a Canadian LGBT social movements, LGBTQ rights activist and author. They became one of the first Canadians to receive a Gender neutrality, gender-neutral birth certificate and passport. Hickey founded The Pathways Foundation, an organization that offers support to survivors of clerical abuse, religious institutional abuse and their families. Since 2010, Hickey has worked as Executive Director of Artforce, formerly known as For the Love of Learning, a non-profit that works to forge new paths for at-risk youth by advancing their literacy and creative skills. Ed Byrne (politician)
Ed Byrne (born 1963) was a Canadian politician, formerly a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. He served as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador and opposition leader from 1998 to 2001. When the Conservatives came to power in 2003, he was named Minister of Natural Resources and Government House Leader, being considered the second-most powerful politician in the province after Premier Danny Williams. Byrne was forced to step down from cabinet in 2006 after it was revealed that he and several other legislators had exceeded their constituency allowance claims, which led to a criminal investigation. He resigned from the Assembly at the end of that year. Kilbride (electoral District)
Kilbride is a defunct provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 10,251 eligible voters living within the district. The district was abolished in 2015 and replaced by Waterford Valley. The district made up the southern portion of the city of St. John's, including the rural neighbourhoods of the Goulds and Kilbride. Agriculture was an important industry in the district. It was one of the strongest Progressive Conservative (PC) districts in the Newfoundland and Labrador, voting 85% for the Torys in the 2007 election. The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador is the superior court for the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mount Cashel Orphanage
The Mount Cashel Orphanage, known locally as the Mount Cashel Boys' Home, was a boys' orphanage located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The orphanage was operated by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, and became infamous for a sexual abuse scandal, and cover-up by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and NL justice officials. History In 1898, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of St. John's Michael Francis Howley donated land for an orphanage on the northeastern edge of the Dominion's capital, approximately north of Quidi Vidi Lake. The orphanage was named the Mount Cashel Boys Home after the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary, where it is said that Saint Patrick baptized the pagan king Óengus mac Nad Froích in 450 AD. PFLAG Canada
PFLAG Canada is a national non-profit organization which brings together family and friends of LGBT people in Canada. It was begun separately and without knowledge of the American PFLAG which performs the same functions in the United States. As of November 2014 PFLAG Canada has over 70 chapters and/or contacts in nine Canadian provinces.
