Geminiano Mundici
Geminiano Mundici (December 26, 1823 – 1908) was an Italian painter, active mainly in his native Modena. Biography Geminiano first studied under Adeodato Malatesta in the Accademia Atestina di Belle Arti in Modena. In 1844 he won the first prize award for painting with religious subject, depicting ''Joseph interprets the dreams of the Pharaoh's Eunuchs''. His silver medallion, ''Tasso in his last days at Sant'Onofrio'' also won awards. In 1847 he defeated fellow alumni Antonio Simonazzi and Giuseppe Zattera in a competition, with his painting of ''Tasso meets his sister Cornelia''. The painting is still in the Institute of Fine Arts. He was granted a stipend and traveled to Venice. He joined the rebellions of 1848, and suffered exile in England until 1857. Adeodato Malatesta
Adeodato Malatesta (May 6, 1806 – December 24, 1891) was an Italian painter, trained in a grand Neoclassical style, depicting mostly of sacred and historic subjects. Biography He was born in Modena. His father was a captain in the Granducal army of Modena. As his name A deo dato or ''given to god'' implies, Adeodato's father had planned a career for the boy in religious orders, but his uncle seeing his disposition to arts, encouraged the young man to enroll in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Modena (Accademia Atestina), where the Academy's director, professor Giuseppe Pisani, seeing the young man's skill, obtained for him a stipend to study in Florence under the Neoclassical artists Benvenuti, Bezzuoli, and Bartolini. Antonio Simonazzi
Antonio Simonazzi (April 24, 1824 - 1908) was an Italian painter, active mainly in his native Modena. Biography Antonio Simonazzi first studied under Adeodato Malatesta in the Accademia Atestina di Belle Arti in Modena. In 1841 he won the first prize award in elements of figure and ornamentation. Three years later, his painting depicting ''David surprises Saul in the tent'' also won awards. This painting is now exhibited in the Istituto d’Arte Venturi of Modena. He then traveled about Italy, studying briefly with Giuseppe Bezzuoli in Florence, and Pietro Selvatico in Venice. Returning to Modena after his travels, in 1847 he lost in a competition of alumni to Geminiano Mundici, but his painting of ''Santa Cecilia'', was placed in the Chiesa del Voto of Modena. Giuseppe Zattera
Giuseppe Zattera (1826-1891) was an Italian painter, mainly depicting landscapes and vedute, but also some sacred subjects. He was born in Legnago in the province of Verona, but studied from 1840-1852 at the Institute of Fine Arts of Modena under Adeodato Malatesta. He later became instructor at the academy in 1873. Among his paintings were ''Tasso encounters his sister in Sorrento'' (1847). He painted an altarpiece depicting ''San Pasquale Baylon'' (1854) for the Church of the Osservanza of Cesena, now moved to the church of Santa Maria delle Assi in Modena. He also painted a ''St Francis de Sales'' (1860) for the church of San Francesco, Reggio. He painted a ''Holy Trinity and Saints'' for the Duomo of Villafranca di Verona, Villafranca, province of Verona. The Ducal Palace of Modena is a Baroque palace in Modena, Italy. It was the residence of the Este Dukes of Modena between 1452 and 1859. It currently houses a portion of the Italian Military Academy. History The palace occupies the site of the former Este Castle, once at the periphery of the city. Although generally credited to Bartolomeo Avanzini, it has been suggested that advice and guidance in the design process had been sought from Pietro da Cortona, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. The Palace has a Baroque façade from which the Honour Court and the Honour Staircase can be accessed. Battle Of Palestro
The Battle of Palestro was fought on 30–31 May 1859 between the Austrian Empire and the combined forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont and France. The Franco-Piedmontese forces were victorious. It was fought just south to Palestro, a town in what is now the province of Pavia in northern Italy. It was believed that the Battle of Palestro was the last European battle in which a European Monarch rode into battle, that being King Victor Emmanuel II, who directly entered the fray with the Austrians. Background Ferenc Gyulay, anticipating an advance on Milan, but unsure of the route, had placed his VIII and IX Korps south of the Po river from Pavia to Piacenza. Gyulay had assigned Zobel's VII Korps responsibility for the Sesia sector.
