Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu
The Gaya Street is a street Sunday market area in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. It is dubbed as the Chinatown of Sabah due to many Chinese coffee shops and restaurants situated there. In addition with an arch gate that was erected since 2005. History The street was known as ''Bond Street'' during the British colonial era, and was established in 1902, after the construction of shop houses there was completed. The street started as a railway track for the transportation of rubber all the way from Sapong and Melalap rubber estates in Tenom which ended at the wharf. The Jesselton Harbour was the main gateway from North Borneo during when there is still no passenger planes. The market is once considered as the "heart" of Jesselton as major business activities was done there. A ''paifang'', also known as a ''pailou'', is a traditional style of Chinese architectural arch or gateway structure. Evolved from the Indian subcontinent's ''torana'' through the introduction of Buddhism to China, it has developed many styles and has been introduced to other East Asian countries, such as Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. Ralph Hone
Major General Sir Herbert Ralph Hone (3 May 1896 – 28 November 1992) was a British Army officer, barrister and colonial administrator. Life up to World War II Ralph Hone was born in Hove, Sussex, and was educated at Varndean Grammar School, Brighton. Hone's mother died while he was in his teens; his father, "a man of character", went on to become mayor of Brighton in 1937. His family, the Hones, were distant relations to Nathaniel Hone the Elder of the famous painting, writing, cricket and diplomatic dynasty the Hones. A paper lantern is a lantern made of thin, brightly colored paper. Paper lanterns come in various shapes and sizes, as well as various methods of construction. In their simplest form, they are simply a paper bag with a candle placed inside, although more complicated lanterns consist of a collapsible bamboo or metal frame of hoops covered with tough paper. Origin Paper lanterns are likely derived from earlier lanterns that used other types of translucent material like silk, horn, or animal skin. The material covering was used to prevent the flame in the lantern from being extinguished by wind, while still retaining its use as a light source. Jesselton Hotel is a hotel located in the city of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. It is the oldest and known as the first ever hotel to be built in the city. History Following the devastation of Jesselton (present-day Kota Kinabalu) after the World War II, the British Colonial governor of Jesselton, Sir Herbert Ralph Hone encouraged British Hong Kong Chinese businessmen to invest and rebuild Jesselton town. Tenom
Tenom ( ms, Pekan Tenom, ) is the capital of the Tenom District in the Interior Division of Sabah, Malaysia. Its population was estimated to be around 5,148 in 2010. It is located about 176 kilometres south of Kota Kinabalu and 128 kilometres north of Long Pasia, which is the one of the famous attraction in Sabah.
