Carmen Lawrence
Carmen Mary Lawrence (born 2 March 1948) is an Australian academic and former politician who was the Premier of Western Australia from 1990 to 1993, the first woman to become the premier of an Australian state. A member of the Labor Party, she later entered federal politics as a member of the House of Representatives from 1994 to 2007, and served as a minister in the Keating Government. Lawrence was born in Northam, Western Australia. She studied psychology at the University of Western Australia, obtaining a doctorate in 1983, and before entering politics worked as a lecturer and researcher. Lawrence was elected to state parliament in 1986, and became a government minister in 1988. She replaced Peter Dowding as premier in 1990, as Australia's second female head of government (after ACT Chief Minister Rosemary Follett) and first female state premier. The Shire of York is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, covering an area of just beyond the eastern fringe of Perth's metropolitan area. The Shire's seat of government is the town of York. History The Shire of York was established as the York Road District on 24 January 1871. The townsite of York separated as the Municipality of York (later the Town of York) ten weeks later on 7 March 1871. It became a shire on 1 July 1961 following the passage of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all road districts into shires. The Town of York merged back into the shire on 15 March 1965. It has been held by the government of the day on every occasion since its creation in 1989. Mundaring was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1974 to 1989. The district was located east of Perth. History First created for the 1974 state election, the district's first member was Labor's James Moiler, who had at that stage already served one term as the member for Toodyay. The district switched parties at the 1977 state election with the election of Liberal candidate Tom Herzfeld. Herzfeld served two terms in parliament before being defeated by 16 votes by Labor candidate Gavan Troy at the 1983 state election. The result was challenged in the Court of Disputed Returns and the election was declared void, but Troy won the resulting by-election by a larger margin, and went on to serve as a minister in the Burke, Dowding and Lawrence governments from 1986 until 1991. Peter Dowding
Peter McCallum Dowding SC (born 6 October 1943) is an Australian lawyer and former politician who served as the 24th Premier of Western Australia, from 25 February 1988 until his forced resignation on 12 February 1990. He was a member of parliament from 1980 to 1990. Dowding graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Laws, and he subsequently worked as a solicitor and barrister. In 1980, he was elected to the North Province of the Western Australian Legislative Council, representing the Labor Party. He entered cabinet when Labor won the 1983 state election, and changed ministries several times over the ensuing years due to cabinet reshuffles. At the 1986 state election, Dowding transferred to the Legislative Assembly, winning the safe seat of Maylands.
