Gatorback
Gatorback Cycle Park is an off-road motorcycle park located northeast of the city of Newberry, FL. This track has gained fame among off-road motorcycle enthusiasts and hosts several American Motorcyclist Association Motorcross events throughout the year, including the famous Mini-O's. It hosted a round of the AMA Motocross Championship from 1983 to 1997. The facility has come under some criticism over the past ten years regarding safety, as several fatalities have occurred during the races. The most recent were in 2006 when a 16-year-old boy and a 39-year-old woman died in two separate ATV crashes two weeks apart. Also, at Mini-Os, there was a crash in 2012 on a dirt bike where the rider died. Newberry, FL
Newberry is a city located in the southwest corner of Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,342 as of the 2020 Census. Much of the city borders neighboring Gilchrist County, to the west. The current Mayor is Jordan Marlowe. Developed as a mining and railroad town in the late 19th century, since the mid-20th century it has developed new commodity crops for agriculture. In 1984 Freddie Warmack was elected as its first black mayor, gaining 60% of the white vote. The city's historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2019, Newberry's city commission has included a National Development Officer for the right-wing John Birch Society. The AMA Motocross Championship (commercially known as Lucas Oil Pro Motocross) is an American motorcycle racing series. The motocross race series was founded and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) in 1972. The series is the major outdoor motocross series in the United States and is sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing and managed by MX Sports Pro Racing. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is an American nonprofit organization of more than 200,000 motorcyclists that organizes numerous motorcycling activities and campaigns for motorcyclists' legal rights.
