The Gathering of Justice and Unity (list 269/710) (also known as Amir al-Fayiz) is a political coalition that contested the 2009 Basra governorate election and is registered for the 2014 Iraqi legislative election. The list is led by Al-Faiz, the head of the Awlad Amir sub-tribe which is predominantly from the Shaykhiyya religious group. They won 2 out of 35 seats. 2009 Basra Governorate Election
The Basra governorate election of 2009 was held on 31 January 2009 alongside elections for all other governorates outside Iraqi Kurdistan and Kirkuk. Background One seat in the election is reserved for Assyrian Christians Basra is the main oil-producing and transit centre in Iraq, which has led to intense competition over control of its Governorate. It has been the centre of competition between the al-Maliki Federal government, which controls the police and army, the Islamic Virtue Party Governor of Basra which controls the Oil Protection Corps and local militias from the Sadrist Movement and Tharallah. Following the Battle of Basra in 2008, the central government seized control of the city's streets from the Sadrist Movement and the security situation improved. In April 2007, SIIC successfully brought a no-confidence motion against Governor Waili. 2014 Iraqi Legislative Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Iraq on 30 April 2014. The elections decided the 328 members of the Council of Representatives who will in turn elect the Iraqi President and Prime Minister. Electoral system The open list form of party-list proportional representation, using the governorates as the constituencies, is the electoral system used. The counting system has been changed slightly from the largest remainder method to the modified Sainte-Laguë method due to a ruling by the Supreme Court of Iraq that the previous method discriminated against smaller parties. Seven "compensatory" seats that were awarded at the national level to those parties whose national share of the vote wasn't reflected in the seats won at the governorate level have been allocated to individual governorates. Shaykhism ( ar, الشيخية) is a Shi'a Islamic school founded by Shaykh Ahmad in early 19th-century Qajar Iran.
