Gather Round
Gather Round is an annual Australian Football League event in which all games in one home-and-away round are played in a single city and its surrounds. The event was first held in 2023 in Adelaide, South Australia, which will host the round each year until 2026. History In September 2022, the Australian Football League (AFL) announced it would host a version of Magic Round in 2023 AFL season, 2023, a round in which all matches would be played in a single city outside of Victoria, Australia, Victoria. The AFL's major competitor, the National Rugby League (NRL), had staged a Magic Round (NRL), Magic Round since 2019 NRL season, 2019, in which all matches were played at Lang Park, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, while another competing competition, Super Rugby Pacific, has held a Super Round since 2022, in which all matches were played at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, AAMI Park. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). Matches have been played in all states, plus the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, as well as in New Zealand and China to expand the league's audience.
