Gastromyzontidae
The Gastromyzontidae are a family of loaches native to China and Southeast Asia, where typically found in streams and rivers with a fast current. The family includes about 137 species in eighteen genera. This family was resurrected by M. Kottelat in his review and revision of the loaches in 2012. They are commonly called hillstream loaches (a name shared with balitoridae The hillstream loaches or river loaches are a family, the Balitoridae, of small fish from South, Southeast and East Asia. The family includes about 202 species. They are sometimes sold as "lizardfish" or (in Germany) "flossensaugers". Many of the ...). References {{Cypriniformes-stub ...

Loach
Loaches are fish of the superfamily Cobitoidea. They are freshwater, benthic (bottom-dwelling) fish found in rivers and creeks throughout Eurasia and northern Africa. Loaches are among the most diverse groups of fish; the 1249 known species of Cobitoidea comprise about 107 genera divided among 9 families. Etymology The name Cobitoidea comes from the type genus, ''Cobitis'', described by Carl Linnaeus in his landmark 1758 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae''. However, its origin predates modern zoological nomenclature and derives from a term used by Aristotle to refer to "small fishes that bury... like the gudgeon." Description Loaches display a wide variety of morphologies, making the group difficult to characterize as a whole using external traits. They range in adult length from the 23 mm (1 in) miniature eel-loach, ''Pangio longimanus'', to the 50 cm (20 in) imperial flower loach, ''Leptobotia elongata'', with the latter weighing up to 3 kg (6.6& ...

Beaufortia Kweichowensis
''Beaufortia kweichowensis'' is a species of gastromyzontid loach native to rivers in China. The common names for this popular aquarium species are Chinese hillstream loach, Hong Kong pleco, butterfly hillstream loach, and Chinese sucker fish. Habitat ''Beaufortia kweichowensis'' can be found in fast-flowing highland and in-land streams in China. In the aquarium Aquarium maintenance An aquarium that duplicates the natural habitat of the Chinese hillstream loach is ideal since these fish require high oxygen levels. They need excellent water-flow, adequate aeration and numerous hiding places inside the tank. Adequate lighting is necessary to promote algal growth in the aquarium. Other live plants, however, are not necessary although they may assist in maintaining water quality. Suitable plants for high-flow tank environments are ''Anubias'' species and ''Microsorum pteropus'', which can be grown on rocks or driftwood. Chinese hillstream loaches normally thrive in an aquati ...

''Sewellia'' is a genus of fish in the family Balitoridae (River Loaches) found in Laos and Vietnam.Kottelat, M. (2012)Conspectus cobitidum: an inventory of the loaches of the world (Teleostei: Cypriniformes: Cobitoidei). ''Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, Suppl. No. 26: 1-199.'' According to Roberts (1998) a possible defining characteristic of the genus ''Sewellia'' is their posterior pelvic valve is highly complex and different from other rheophilic loaches (loaches adapted to fast flowing water), their posterior pelvic valve involves the overlapping of the second to last ventrally exposed rays. Adapted to high velocity streams ''Sewellia'' have depressed body shapes that are laterally expanded thus increasing their hydrodynamical properties and allowing them to better stay attached to rocks in swift current. ''Sewellia'' also have paired fins with a single simple ray and numerous branched rays allowing them to grip rocks in swift current. Distribution Fish in the genus ''Sewellia ...
