Gaston Hardy
Gaston Hardy (April 22, 1917 – July 15, 1977) was a municipal and provincial politician in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec. He was the 13th Mayor of the City of Shawinigan Falls, from 1954 to 1957. 1956 Quebec General Election
The 1956 Quebec general election was held on June 20, 1956, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Union Nationale, led by Maurice Duplessis, won re-election, defeating the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Georges-Émile Lapalme. This was the fifth and final time (and the fourth in a row) that Duplessis led his party to a general election victory. No party has since been able to win more than three elections in a row. Duplessis died in office in 1959. It was Lapalme's second (and final) loss in a row as Liberal leader. The Liberals did not manage to improve on their performance in the previous 1952 election. François Roy
François Roy (1896–1970) was a local politician in Shawinigan, Quebec. He was the 12th Mayor of Shawinigan, Quebec from 1946 to 1954. Roy was born in 1896 in Rivière-des-Prairies, near Montreal. He successfully ran for mayor in 1946 and was re-elected in 1948 and 1951. The current Shawinigan City Hall (located in downtown Shawinigan at 550 Avenue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville) was constructed in 1948 under his tenure. The structure has an Art Deco architectural style and is similar to the Vancouver City Hall. Roy also unveiled the Monument des Braves. He ran for mayor again in 1963 but lost to Gérard Dufresne. Roy died in Shawinigan in 1970. Union des artistes president and actor Raymond Legault performed the role of François Roy for one of La Cité de l'Énergie multimedia shows. Jacques Lacoursière
Jacques Lacoursière, (4 May 1932 – 1 June 2021) was a Canadian TV host, author and historian. Life and career Lacoursière was born in Shawinigan, in the Mauricie region, and then resided in Beauport in the Greater Quebec area. Lacoursière held an M.A. degree in history from the University of Ottawa. Renowned not only for his talents as a researcher, but also for his ability to communicate and make history accessible to a larger audience, he worked with film director Gilles Carle. Together they produced the TV series ''Épopée en Amérique : une histoire populaire du Québec'' which Lacoursière hosted in 1997. He died on 1 June 2021, at the age of 89. Honors Lacoursière was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2006. In 2002, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. Joseph-Irénée-René Hamel (February 9, 1910 – December 16, 1982) was a local politician in Quebec, Canada. He served as Member of the Canadian Parliament and as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. Early life He was born in 1910 in Grand-Mère, Quebec, Mauricie. World War II politics During World War II Hamel joined the Bloc Populaire Canadien, a political party that opposed conscription. He was the party’s provincial candidate in the district of Saint-Maurice in 1944, but lost the election against Marc Trudel. The following year though, he successfully ran in the federal district of Saint-Maurice—Laflèche. After the war, the party quickly dissolved and by 1949 Hamel was sitting as an Independent MP. 1960 Quebec General Election
The 1960 Quebec general election was held on June 22, 1960, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. It was one of the most significant elections in Quebec history, rivalled perhaps only by the 1976 general election. The incumbent Union Nationale, led by Antonio Barrette, was defeated by the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Lesage. The 1960 election set the stage for the Quiet Revolution, a major social transformation of all aspects of Quebec society throughout the 1960s. Among many other changes, the influence and power of the Catholic Church fell sharply as Quebec became a secular society. Saint-Maurice is a provincial electoral district located in the Mauricie region of Quebec, Canada. It includes part of the city of Shawinigan; it does not, however, include the parish municipality of Saint-Maurice, Quebec, Saint-Maurice (although it borders on it). Shawinigan () is a city located on the Saint-Maurice River in the Mauricie area in Quebec, Canada. It had a population of 49,349 as of the 2016 Canadian census. Shawinigan is also a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and census division (CD) of Quebec, coextensive with the city of Shawinigan. Its geographical code is 36. Shawinigan is the seat of the judicial district of Saint-Maurice. The name Shawinigan has had numerous spellings over time: Chaouinigane, Oshaouinigane, Assaouinigane, Achawénégan, Chawinigame, Shawenigane, Chaouénigane. The Union nationale () was a conservative and nationalist provincial political party in Quebec, Canada, that identified with Québécois autonomism. It was created during the Great Depression and held power in Quebec from 1936 to 1939, and from 1944 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. The party was founded by Maurice Duplessis, who led it until his death in 1959.
