Gas Station At Bridge And Island Streets
The Gas Station at Bridge and Island Streets is a historic automotive service station in Bellows Falls, Vermont. Built about 1935, it is a modest yet well-preserved example of period roadside commercial architecture of the period. The Colonial Revival building continues to be used as a service facility; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Description and history The gas station is located south of the center of the island formed by the Connecticut River and the Bellows Falls Canal, east of the Bellows Falls downtown area. It is set at the northeastern corner of the Island and Bridge Streets, the two main roads that traverse the island. It is a single-story frame structure, with a flat roof and clapboard siding. Bellows Falls, Vermont
Bellows Falls is an incorporated village located in the town of Rockingham in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,747 at the 2020 census. Bellows Falls is home to the Green Mountain Railroad, a heritage railroad; the annual Roots on the River Festival; and the No Film Film Festival. History The community was settled in 1753 by colonists of English descent, who called it Great Falls. Later the settlers renamed the town for Colonel Benjamin Bellows, a landowner, but kept the name Great Falls for the waterfall, a translation of their Abenaki name, "Kitchee pontegu." In 1785, Colonel Enoch Hale built at the falls the first bridge over the Connecticut River. It was the only bridge across the river until 1796, when another was built at Springfield, Massachusetts. The Charles N. Vilas Bridge is a two-span concrete deck arch bridge over the Connecticut River between Bellows Falls, Vermont and North Walpole, New Hampshire. It was built in 1930 and has been closed since March 19, 2009. History Colonel Enoch Hale built a wooden covered toll bridge on this site in 1784, the first bridge over the Connecticut River.Hard, pp. 143-144 The toll was 3¢ for a man on horseback, double if he were in a chaise.
