Gary Wisener
Gary Gayle Wisener (August 24, 1938 – December 7, 2020) was an American football wide receiver in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys. He also was a member of the Houston Oilers in the American Football League, during their second AFL Championship season. He played college football at Baylor University. Early years Wisener attended Fort Smith High School before moving on to Baylor University. He became a starter as a senior at left offensive end. During the 1960 Southwest Conference Track and Field Championships, he won first place in the javelin competition, while also placing in the broad jump and the high hurdles. Professional career Dallas Cowboys Wisener was selected by the Boston Patriots in the 1960 AFL Draft, but instead chose to sign with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys as a free agent. Javelin
A javelin is a light spear designed primarily to be thrown, historically as a ranged weapon, but today predominantly for sport. The javelin is almost always thrown by hand, unlike the sling, bow, and crossbow, which launch projectiles with the aid of a hand-held mechanism. However, devices do exist to assist the javelin thrower in achieving greater distance, such as spear-throwers or the amentum. A warrior or soldier armed primarily with one or more javelins is a javelineer. The word javelin comes from Middle English and it derives from Old French ''javelin'', a diminutive of ''javelot'', which meant spear. The 1962 American Football League season was the third regular season of the AFL. It consisted of 8 franchises split into two divisions: the East Division (Buffalo Bills, Houston Oilers, Titans of New York, Boston Patriots) and the West Division (San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders). The season ended when the Texans defeated the Houston Oilers in the AFL Championship game. Division races The AFL had 8 teams, grouped into two divisions. Each team would play a home-and-away game against the other 7 teams in the league for a total of 14 games, and the best team in the Eastern Division would play against the best in the Western Division in a championship game. 1961 NFL Season
The 1961 NFL season was the 42nd regular season of the National Football League (NFL). The league expanded to 14 teams with the addition of the Minnesota Vikings, after the team's owners declined to be charter members of the new American Football League. The schedule was also expanded from 12 games per team to 14 games per team where it would stay for 16 years. The Vikings were placed in the Western Conference, and the Dallas Cowboys were switched from the Western Conference to the Eastern. The addition of the Vikings returned the NFL to an even number of teams (and eliminated the bye week of 1960 until temporarily and on a permanent basis). The season ended when the Green Bay Packers shut out the New York Giants 37–0 in the 1961 NFL Championship Game. Safety (gridiron Football Position)
Safety is a position in gridiron football on the American football positions#Defense, defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field. While American (11-player) formations generally use two safeties, Canadian (12-player) formations generally have one safety and two Halfback (Canadian football), defensive halfbacks, a position not used in the American game. 1960 Dallas Cowboys Season
The Dallas Cowboys season was the inaugural season for the franchise in the National Football League (NFL). The Cowboys finished their first season with zero wins, 11 losses, and one tie, finishing last in the Western Conference and in the NFL for that season. Their record was also worse than Dallas' previous entry into the NFL, the Dallas Texans, who finished 1–11 in their only season in 1952, and relocated after that season to Baltimore (being rebranded as the Colts). 1960 AFL Draft
The 1960 American Football League draft was held on November 23–24, 1959, in Minneapolis, shortly after the organization of the league, and lasted 33 rounds. An additional draft of 20 rounds was held by the AFL on December 2. Teams were required to fill the 11 squad positions by selecting four backs, two ends, two tackles, two guards, and a center with their first 11 picks. Before each position was selected, teams drew lots to determine the selection order. Though professional teams used dedicated offensive and defensive units, the league did not want to go 22 rounds before starting unrestricted drafting.
