Gary Lyon
Garry Peter Lyon (born 13 September 1967) is a former professional Australian rules football player and was captain of the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Since his retirement from football, he has been mainly an Australian rules football media personality, featuring on television, radio and in newspapers. He has also coached during the International Rules Series. He is the most recent VFL/AFL player to kick ten goals in a finals match, having done so in the 1994 Second Semi-Final against Footscray, and the first since Geelong's George Goninon in 1951, 43 years prior. Early life Lyon, the son of former Hawthorn player Peter Lyon, was born in Devonport, Tasmania. In his youth he moved to Victoria. Devonport, Tasmania
Devonport ( ; Palawa Kani: ''Tiagarra'') is a city in northern Tasmania, Australia, located on the lands of the Pannilerpanner clan of the Palawa nation. It is situated at the mouth of the Mersey River. Devonport had an urban population of 26,150 at the 2021 Australian census. History The first European settlement before 1850 was on a block of land at Frogmore, near present-day Latrobe. In 1850, a settler named Oldaker occupied land at present-day Devonport. George Goninon
George Goninon (born 18 April 1927) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Tasmanian North West Football Union (NWFU) and Victorian Football League (VFL). Goninon was Geelong's champion goalkicker at full-forward in the 1951 and 1952 Grand Final wins, including kicking 11 goals in the 1951 Semi-Final, the equal-most goals scored in a VFL/AFL final, and the last player to get a double-digit goal tally in a final for 43 years (when Garry Lyon kicked 10 goals in a semi-final in 1994). He was going strong in 1953, with the Cats being hot favourites to make it three in a row. However, he was dropped from the team that would go on to lose the flag to Collingwood by two goals as a consequence of his marital infidelity. The AFL Footy Show
''The Footy Show'' was an Australian sports and variety entertainment television program which aired on the Nine Network. The show was dedicated to the Australian Football League (AFL) and Australian rules football. The show featured a panel of hosts and a rotating regular panel of guests. Under the show's initial format, which ran from 1994 to 2018, ''The Footy Show'' was variously hosted by Eddie McGuire, Billy Brownless, Sam Newman, Trevor Marmalade, Garry Lyon, James Brayshaw, Rebecca Maddern and Craig Hutchison, with changes to the line-up throughout, and won eight Logie Awards for Most Popular Sports Program. The All-Australian team is an all-star team of Australian rules football in Australia, Australian rules footballers, selected by a panel at the end of each season. It represents a complete team, including an interchange bench, of the best-performed players during the season, led by that season's premiership coach. Despite its nature, the All-Australian team is only ceremonial. Jim Main
Jim Main (1943 – August 2022) was an Australian sports journalist and writer. He is known especially for his coverage of Australian rules football. He studied law at the University of Melbourne and later graduated from La Trobe University with a bachelor of arts degree. Main worked at the Melbourne ''Herald'' and later on London's '' Daily Express''. He was later sports editor of ''The Australian'' for more than 10 years. He covered several Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games and won a Walkley Award for his coverage of the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. Main was inducted into the Melbourne Cricket Ground Media Hall of Fame in 2003. 1997 AFL Season
The 1997 AFL season was the 101st season of the Australian Football League (AFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Australia, which was known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. The season ran from 27 March until 27 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top eight clubs. Before the season, the Port Adelaide Football Club (SANFL) was admitted to the league, increasing the South Australian membership to two clubs. Foundation club Fitzroy, which had gone into administration in 1996, merged with the Brisbane Bears to form a new Queensland-based club known as the Brisbane Lions. The Footscray Football Club changed its name to the Western Bulldogs. With these changes, the league's size remained at sixteen clubs.
