Gary Hinton
Gary Hinton (born 1956-08-29 in Darby, PA) was an American boxer at welterweight. Professional career Hinton turned pro in 1978.In 1985 he challenged Aaron Pryor for the IBF light welterweight title and lost a split decision over 15 rounds. When Pryor was stripped of his title for not defending it, he won the vacant IBF light welterweight title with a decision win over Reyes Antonio Cruz in 1986. Darby is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The borough is located along Darby Creek southwest of Center City Philadelphia. The borough of Darby is distinct from the nearby municipality of Darby Township. History Darby was settled in 1682 by seven Quaker families led by abolitionist & fair trade avocate John Blunston. The name Darby is derived from the English city of Derby (pronounced ''"Darby"''), the county town of Derbyshire (pronounced ''"Darbyshire"''), the origin of many early settlers. Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Etymology The first known instance of the term is from 1831, meaning "heavyweight horseman," later "boxer or wrestler of a certain weight" by 1896. Aaron Pryor
Aaron Pryor (October 20, 1955 – October 9, 2016) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1976 to 1990. He was a two-time light welterweight world champion, having held the WBA title from 1980 to 1983, and the IBF title from 1984 to 1985. Additionally, he held the '' Ring'' magazine title from 1980 to 1983, and the lineal title from 1983 to 1986. In 1982, the Boxing Writers Association of America named Pryor as their Fighter of the Year. Pryor was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996, and in 1999 was voted by the Associated Press as the world's best light welterweight of the 20th century. Joe Manley
Joe Louis Manley Jr. (born June 11, 1959) is an American former boxer who fought at light welterweight. Amateur career Manley qualified as a lightweight for the 1980 United States Olympic team, defeating Frankie Randall on his way to earning his berth. Manley did not compete, however, due to the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics. Manley was also the 1981 United States Amateur champion at lightweight. Professional career Manley became a professional boxer in 1981. He lost to future champion Gene Hatcher in 1983 but defeated another future champion, Freddie Pendleton, in 1985. He qualified for his title shot by winning a decision over Howard Davis Jr. in February 1986.
