Gary Fortune
Garrett Reese Fortune (October 11, 1894 – September 23, 1955) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball who played between and for the Philadelphia Phillies (1916, 1918) and Boston Red Sox (1920). Listed at , , Fortune was a switch-hitter and threw left-handed. He was born in High Point, North Carolina. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. In baseball statistics, a relief pitcher is credited with a game finished (denoted by GF) if he is the last pitcher to pitch for his team in a game. A starting pitcher is not credited with a GF for pitching a complete game. Mariano Rivera is the all-time leader in games finished with 952.
