Gary Fildes
Gary Fildes (born 27 September 1965) is an amateur astronomer. Early life and education Fildes was born in Sunderland in 1965. Growing up in Grindon, a council estate on the outskirts of Sunderland, he left school at the age of sixteen to work as a bricklayer. Not formally trained in astronomy or academia, in 2012 Fildes was given an honorary master's degree from Durham University. Career Early career and Sunderland Astronomical Society Fildes worked as a bricklayer in the North East for 25 years. In the late 1990s he joined the Sunderland Astronomical Society and eventually started hosting Kielder Forest Star Camps in the Kielder Forest. Kielder Observatory While running star camps and other astronomy events, Fildes was the lead contributor and driving force in the effort to build an observatory. Grindon, County Durham
Grindon is a village in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, England. The civil parish population at the census 2001 was 2,603 reducing to 2,484 at the 2011 Census. It is situated between Sedgefield and Stockton-on-Tees, near to Thorpe Thewles and Thorpe Larches. The place name of "Grindon" is derived from the word 'dun', which meant hill. Grindon is situated in the Upland Fells, formed of Carboniferous millstone grit. "The alternating strata of harder and softer rocks give a stepped profile to many dale sides and distinctive flat-topped summits to the higher fells." The village formerly had a parish directly named after it; since May 2019 its parish is Grindon and Thorpe Thewles. The Kielder Forest Star Camp is an annual star party held each autumn and spring in Kielder Forest. The five night event is based on the Kielder Campsite. Free talks on astronomy are held at nearby Kielder Castle on the Saturday. The event started in October 2003. Kielder Forest
Kielder Forest is a large forestry plantation in Northumberland, England, surrounding Kielder village and the Kielder Water reservoir. It is the largest man-made woodland in England with three-quarters of its covered by forest. The majority of the forest lies within Kielder Water and Forest Park, with the southern tip known as Wark Forest lying within Northumberland National Park. The forest is next to the England - Scotland border. History The forest is owned and managed by Forestry England, which initiated the first plantings in the 1920s. During the 1930s, the Ministry of Labour supplied men from among the ranks of the unemployed. Many came from the mining communities and shipyards of North East England. Kielder Observatory
Kielder Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in Kielder Forest, Northumberland, England. It is situated high upon Black Fell overlooking Kielder Water near the Scottish border, and half a mile up a forest track from James Turrell's Kielder Skyspace. The site was chosen due to its pristine night skies in a location free of light pollution with clear views to all horizons, and is one of the best places in the UK to view the Milky Way. The observatory's design is the result of a competition managed by RIBA Competitions which was won by London-based Charles Barclay Architects. The building is powered by solar panels and a wind turbine. It won the RIBA Award for its architecture in 2009 and also that same year a Civic Trust Award. Astronomer Royal is a senior post in the Royal Households of the United Kingdom. There are two officers, the senior being the Astronomer Royal dating from 22 June 1675; the junior is the Astronomer Royal for Scotland dating from 1834. The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is a United States-based non-profit organization incorporated in 1988 by founders David Crawford, a professional astronomer, and Tim Hunter, a physician/amateur astronomer. The mission of the IDA is "to preserve and protect the night time environment and our heritage of dark skies through quality outdoor lighting." Light pollution is the result of outdoor lighting that is not properly shielded, allowing light shine into the eyes and night sky. Direct light that shines into the eyes is called glare, and light directed into the night sky above the horizon causes skyglow.
