''Gothic Hospital'' is a book by Australian author Gary Crew. Synopsis The book focuses on a teenager named Johnny Doolan who discovers many old gothic books in his attic after his younger sister dies of tuberculosis, which results in his parents breaking up. The books' chapters are replaced by "sessions" as the book is partly set at a psychiatrist's office. In the book, Johnny claims to his psychiatrist that when he reads the books in his attic, the book "fills itself in" with colour, and Johnny becomes part of the story. One book Johnny particularly becomes engrossed in, is a book about an old Gothic hospital, and Johnny eventually believes that his father is trapped in the book. Libby Hathorn
Elizabeth Helen Hathorn (born 1943) is an Australian writer for children, and a poet who works with schools, institutions and communities. She has received many awards for her books, some of which have been translated into several languages. In 2001 she was awarded a Centenary Medal for her contribution to children's theatre. In 2014 she was awarded the Alice Award for her contribution to Australian literature. In 2017 she won the Asher Peace Prize and in 2022 the Pixie O'Harris ABIA Award for excellence and dedication to children's literature. Early life Hathorn was born in Newcastle, New South Wales. She attended Balmain Teacher's College (soon part of the New South Wales Institute of Technology) and worked as a teacher and librarian from 1965 to 1981. Shaun Tan
Shaun Tan (born 1973) is an Australian artist, writer and film maker. He won an Academy Award for '' The Lost Thing'', a 2011 animated film adaptation of a 2000 picture book he wrote and illustrated. Narelle Oliver
Narelle Oliver (1960 - 2016) was an Australian artist, print maker and award-winning children's author-illustrator. Early life Narelle Oliver was born on 25 February 1960 and grew up in Toowoomba in south east Queensland. Career Oliver majored in design and printmaking while studying for a Bachelor of Education degree. She began her career teaching at the Queensland School for the Deaf. Oliver was an educator and a committed environmentalist. As an illustrator, Oliver combined linocut, watercolour, pastels, collage and digitally-enhanced photographs in her work.
