Gary Cox (Gaelic Footballer)
Gary Cox is a Gaelic footballer from County Roscommon, Ireland. He first came to prominence with the Roscommon Junior team that won Connacht and All Ireland titles in 2000 along with future Senior stars like Karol Mannion and Shane Curran. The following year he was part of the Roscommon side that won the Connacht Senior Football Championship. He plays his club football with the St Faithleach's club. As well as representing his country in the 2003 International Rules Series in Australia, he has played for NUIG in the Sigerson Cup, and Connacht in the Railway Cup. Salthill-Knocknacarra () is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the Salthill and Knocknacarra areas in Galway City, Ireland. The club is a member of the Galway GAA. Salthill-Knocknacarra GAA Club caters for huge numbers of young boys and girls and adults who play Football, Hurling, Ladies Football and Camogie in the parishes of Salthill and Knocknacarra. History The club was founded in 1966 under the banner of Cumann Naomh Ciarán. During the 1980s the Club became a major underage force in Galway football under the guidance of Club greats such as Tony Regan and Liam Sammon. This resulted in over ten championships at both minor and U-21 levels being won. The Roscommon County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae Ros Comáin) or Roscommon GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Roscommon. The county board is also responsible for the Roscommon county teams. The county football team was the third from the province of Connacht to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Galway and Mayo. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Karol Mannion
Karol Mannion is a Gaelic footballer who plays for the St Brigid's club and the Roscommon county team. He first came to prominence with the Roscommon junior team that won Connacht and All-Ireland titles in 2000. He was also part of the Roscommon team that won the Connacht Senior Football Championship in 2010. He plays his club football with St Brigid's with whom he has had much success winning Roscommon Senior Football Championship medals in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. He also has won Connacht Senior Club Football Championships in 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012. He also played in the 2011 All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship final but lost out to Crossmaglen Rangers. Shane Curran (footballer)
Shane Curran (born 8 April 1971) is an Irish sportsperson from Castlerea, County Roscommon. He is the former inter-county Gaelic football goalkeeper for Roscommon, and his club St Brigid's. He played association football as well with Athlone Town FC. Curran holds the record of being the only goalkeeper to score both a goal and a point in championship football, his 1-1 versus Sligo in the Connacht championship led to him receiving the Irish Independent "May player of the Month" in 2004. Curran followed in his father's footsteps in 2012 by winning a Connacht club senior medal, becoming the fourth father-and-son to hold such medals. His career spanned four decades, with performances at minor, senior and club levels in 1989, 1990, 2003, 2004 and 2013. He also captained the Roscommon Junior Team to All Ireland success in 2000. Connacht Senior Football Championship
The Connacht Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition for the senior county teams of Connacht GAA. All of the counties of Connacht participate in the championship, as well as counties London and New York. The winning team receives the Nestor Cup. The Connacht Senior Football Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. A series of games are played during the summer months and the final is played in June or July. The winner progresses directly to the All-Ireland Super 8s, while losing teams progress to the All-Ireland Qualifiers (before 2001 the All-Ireland was a straight knock-out format meaning all losing teams were eliminated after a single defeat).
