Gary Conn
Gary Conn is an American retired ice hockey center who was an All-American for Maine. Career Conn was a member of Maine's first recruiting class when the ice hockey program was revived in 1977. The Black Bears started out in Division II and saw some success with Conn as leading scorer in his freshman season. The next season, Maine finished in the top three in their 16-team division and made the postseason. Conn again led the team in scoring, this time with 65 points, and was named to the All-Conference team. Maine received the top seed in the ECAC 2 Tournament and won their first playoff game but were upset in the semifinals. After their 25-win season, the program was promoted to Division I and jumped straight into ECAC Hockey. Conn led the team in scoring for the third consecutive year, though with 20 fewer points and the Black Bears finished with a losing record. Goal (ice Hockey)
In ice hockey, a goal is scored when the puck entirely crosses the goal line between the two goal posts and below the goal crossbar. A goal awards one point to the team attacking the goal scored upon, regardless of which team the player who actually deflected the puck into the goal belongs to (see also own goal). Typically, a player on the team attempting to score shoots the puck with their stick towards the goal net opening, and a player on the opposing team called a goaltender tries to block the shot to prevent a goal from being scored against their team. American Hockey Coaches Association
The American Hockey Coaches Association was formed in 1947 in Boston. The founding members coached college ice hockey but membership has grown to include coaches at every level of the sport from youth hockey to professional ice hockey, although the organization maintains a focus on the collegiate game. Aside from its collaborative and community functions, the association also names several award winners each year, most significantly the college ice hockey All-Americans in both divisions and both genders. 1981–82 ACHL Season
The 1981–82 Atlantic Coast Hockey League season was the first season of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League (1981–87), Atlantic Coast Hockey League, a North American minor professional league. Seven teams participated in the regular season, and the Mohawk Valley Stars were the league champions. The Fitchburg Trappers and Schenectady Chiefs folded during the first month of the season and the Cape Cod Buccaneers, owned by World Wrestling Foundation mogul Vince McMahon, withdrew after 39 games. The four remaining clubs voted to cut short the regular season and move directly to the playoffs. The Salem Raiders had the best record in the league at the time at 32-15. The Raiders lost to the Mohawk Valley Stars of Utica, New York in the championship series. The 1977–78 NCAA Division II men's ice hockey season began in November 1977 and concluded on March 18 of the following year. This was the 14th season of second-tier college ice hockey. The NCAA instituted a Division II national championship beginning with this season. Bowdoin was one of the two ECAC 2 tournament champions, however, because Bowdoin College barred its teams from participating in national tournaments at the time runner-up Merrimack was selected instead. Due to the number of independent programs and the lack of any conference tournament for western teams, the NCAA also began holding a playoff series for western teams to help determine which schools would receive bids.
