Gary Community School Corporation serves most students who reside in Gary, Indiana. History In 2017, Gary Community Corp became the first school system in Indiana involved in a state takeover. Control of the district was transferred from the elected school board and appointed school superintendent to the State of Indiana's Distressed Unit Appeals Board, which placed MGT Consulting and Emergency Fiscal Manager Peggy Hinckley in charge of managing the district. Gary school board President Rosie Washington was quoted as saying "We Have No Power", in the context of the state's takeover. In November 2018, it was discovered that former Indiana Superintendent Tony Bennett, who directed policies that led to the state takeover, has an ownership stake in the for-profit company selected to manage the takeover with the potential to earn $11.4 million. Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The city has been historically dominated by major industrial activity and is home to U.S. Steel's Gary Works, the largest steel mill complex in North America. Gary is located along the southern shore of Lake Michigan about east of downtown Chicago, Illinois. William A Wirt Senior High School was a four-year (9-12) public high school of the Gary Community School Corporation in Gary, Indiana. In May 2009 the school announced that after over 70 years, it would finally be closing. As of 2011, the site is used for the Wirt Emerson VPA Academy, a magnet school for the visual and performing arts. Staff The faculty included nearly 50 teachers. History Wirt High School was established in 1939; it was named after Dr. William Albert Wirt, who served as the first superintendent of the Gary Schools from 1907 to early 1938. History In 1926 the 45th Avenue School of Gary, Indiana was officially named Lew Wallace High School named after Lew Wallace. Wallace was a native to Indiana who served as a United States General during the American Civil War, as the Governor of the New Mexico Territory, the Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, and as the author of ''Ben Hur.'' Tolleston is a neighborhood and former town in west-central Gary, Indiana. It is situated south of Ambridge, west of Midtown, east of Westside and north of Black Oak. Tolleston is the site of two large city parks (MC Bennett Park and Tolleston Park), a historic cemetery, and the oldest church north of the Little Calumet River. The neighborhood's borders are defined by the Norfolk Southern tracks on the north, Grant Street on the east, 25th Avenue on the south, and Clark Road on the west. Theodore Roosevelt High School (Gary)
Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy (TRCCA), formerly known as Theodore Roosevelt High School and often referred to as Gary Roosevelt, was a charter school located in the Midtown neighborhood of Gary, Indiana, United States. In February 2020, the Distressed Unit Appeal Board voted to close Roosevelt after a series of burst pipes throughout the winter of 2019 left the school in need of expensive repairs.
