Biff (cartoon)
Biff is a British cartoon strip, created since the mid 1970s by Chris Garratt and Mick Kidd. The first Biff collection was published in 1982 The strip was first published in the newspaper '' The Guardian'' in 1985. Biff Weekend ran there weekly for 20 years. The comic originated in a series of single-panel postcards before evolving into multi-panel comic strips. It has also been published in the magazine ''Viz'', fRoots and since 2001 in the magazine of the Rough Guides. The cartoons are notable for their absurd, ironic, satirical and metafictional edge. History Chris Garratt and Mick Kidd met at grammar school in the 1950s and have collaborated on Biff since the mid-1970s. Herbert William Garratt
Herbert William Garratt (8 June 1864 – 25 September 1913) was an English mechanical engineer and the inventor of the Garratt system of articulated locomotives. Garratt began his engineering career by serving an apprenticeship under John Carter Park, then locomotive superintendent of the North London Railway, from 1879 to 1882 at the North London Railway's Bow works. He gained further experience at Doxford's marine engineering works in Sunderland and later as an inspector for Sir Charles Fox and Sir Alexander Rendel. Garratt joined the Argentine Central Railway in 1889, where he became Locomotive Superintendent in 1892, and between 1900 and 1906 he worked for railways in Cuba, Lagos and Lima (Peru). In 1902, Garratt was elected to membership of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. A Garratt (often referred to as a Beyer Garratt) is a type of steam locomotive invented by British engineer Herbert William Garratt that is articulated into three parts. Its boiler, firebox, and cab are mounted on a centre frame or "bridge". The two other parts, one at each end, have a pivot to support the central frame; they consist of a steam engine unit – with driving wheels, trailing wheels, valve gear, and cylinders, and above it, fuel and/or water storage. Articulation permits locomotives to negotiate curves that might restrict large rigid-framed locomotives. The design also provides more driving wheels per unit of locomotive weight, permitting operation on lightly engineered track. Garratt locomotives produced as much as twice the power output of the largest conventional locomotives of railways that introduced them, reducing the need for multiple locomotives and crews. Humphry Garratt
Humphry Stone Garratt (12 January 1898 – 1 September 1974) was an English first-class cricketer who played in five matches for Worcestershire in the 1920s. His debut came in 1925 against Oxford University at The Parks; in a drawn game he scored 11 and 5. His next match was not until two years later, when he appeared against the New Zealanders on their first tour of England, where his 31 from number ten in the order could not prevent a heavy Worcestershire defeat. Garratt's three other first-class appearances all came in the 1928 County Championship. In the first, a drawn game against Yorkshire, he made a career-best 39, but he did little in the other two matches, against Sussex (which Worcestershire lost by 243 runs) and Leicestershire (which Worcestershire lost by an innings and 206 runs). Martin Blake George Garratt (22 February 1980 – 24 October 2014) was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder in the Football League for York City, Mansfield Town and Lincoln City. Career Born in York, North Yorkshire, Garratt grew up in Middlesbrough and he joined the York City youth system in 1996, turning professional in 1998. He made his first-team debut in a 3–0 defeat to Preston North End on 8 August 1998. He finished the 1998–99 season with 44 appearances and one goal. He trained with Leeds United after the end of the season. He was sacked by York after experiencing personal problems and he was signed by Mansfield Town in 2000. Nick Garratt
Nicholas Richard Garratt (6 December 1947 – 8 July 2019) was an Australian rowing coach. He was the head coach of Rowing ACT, coaching the ACT High Performance Program along with the ACT Academy of Sport Rowing Program, in Canberra, Australia. Biography Garratt previously held down the role as the head coach at Haberfield Rowing Club (now UTS Rowing Club) from 1988 to 1992. He moved back to Western Australia to take on the role of talent identification coach at the Western Australian Institute of Sport, a position he held until 1995. From there he held the head coach position at Mosman Rowing Club, in Sydney, Australia, until early 2017. Owen “Pencilneck” Garratt (born 1968) is an artist and musician born in Saskatchewan, Canada. Personal life Owen Garratt was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, the only child of Gary and Susan Garratt. Gary and Susan divorced in 1971 and Owen lived with his mother until her death in a plane crash in January, 1982. He then moved to Wawota, Saskatchewan to live with his father, who farmed and worked on oil rigs. His father's involvement in the oil drilling industry established the ties that would lead to Owen being persuaded to draw oilfield-related pictures later in his career. Wayne Garratt
Wayne Malcolm Garratt (30 October 1968 in Halesowen, England – 28 September 1992) was a speedway rider in the United Kingdom, who started his speedway career with the Cradley Heathens in the British League on his 16th birthday. Garratt was also a junior grasstrack champion at the age of six. He was well known as ‘Bodger'. Career summary Garratt showed a lot of promise, but due to the points limit restrictions he was loaned to the Arena Essex Hammers in the National League for two seasons. He was recalled to Cradley again in 1991 but was forced out again by the points limit for 1992. However, in 1992, whilst on loan with the Newcastle Diamonds he was involved in a crash at Brough Park on Sunday 13 September and was rushed to hospital and placed on a life support machine.
