Chief Justice Of Sri Lanka
The Chief Justice of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is the head of the judiciary of Sri Lanka and the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Established in 1801, the Chief Justice is one of ten Supreme Court justices; the other nine are the Puisne Justices of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. The post was created in 1801. The Chief Justice is nominated by the Constitutional Council, and appointed by the President. The first Chief Justice was Codrington Edmund Carrington. The 47th and current Chief Justice is Jayantha Jayasuriya. William Gopallawa
William Gopallawa (, ; 17 September 1896 – 31 January 1981) was the last Governor-General of Ceylon from 1962 to 1972 and became the first and only non-executive and ceremonial President of Sri Lanka when Ceylon declared itself a republic in 1972 and changed its name to Sri Lanka. From 1948 to 1972, the Dominion of Ceylon was a Commonwealth realm with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state and Queen of Ceylon. He served as Governor-General during the tenure of different governments headed by Sirimavo Bandaranaike of the SLFP and Dudley Senanayake of the UNP. Hugh Norman Gregory Fernando, OBE (17 November 1910 – 24 March 1976) was Sri Lanka lawyer and judge. He was the 33rd Chief Justice of Ceylon and had served as Legal Draftsman of Ceylon. Early life and education Born to V. M. Fernando, a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Ceylon, Fernando was educated at St. Joseph's College, Colombo and at the University of Oxford, where he gained a BA degree and was called to the bar as a barrister from the Gray's Inn. On his return to Ceylon, he was enrolled as an advocate. Legal career Having acted as a Crown Counsel between December 1935 to September 1936, he was appointed Assistant Legal Draftsman on 1 October 1936. On secondment he served as Secretary of the Mortgage Law Commission and the Committee Investigating Representations from Departments where strikes occurred. Victor Tennekoon
Deshamanya Justice Victor Tennekoon QC (9 September 1914 – April 1990) was a Sri Lankan lawyer and jurist. He served as the 35th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, as well as the 33rd Attorney General and 23rd Solicitor General. From 1979 to 1984 Tennekoon served as Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya. Early life and education Born on 9 September 1914 in the Central Province of British Ceylon, he had four brothers; Herbert Tennekoon, former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka; Reginald Tennekoon, member of parliament for Minipe; George Tennekoon, Professor of Pathology, University of Peradeniya and Kenneth Tennekoon, an engineer who emigrated to the UK in 1956 and one sister Dulcie Wijenaike.
