Gardenvale is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Glen Eira local government area. Gardenvale recorded a population of 1,019 at the 2021 census. History Prior to subdivision in 1908, the area was a paddock owned by the Lemprière family, and was in use for a polo ground. The Lemprières were a prominent Caulfield family with several members serving on the Caulfield Council. The railway station, built in 1907, was named Garden Vale - the origins of the name are unknown, but it is possibly due to market gardens in the surrounding countryside. A Garden Vale East Post Office opened in 1914, and was renamed Garden Vale in 1922 and Gardenvale about 1940. Gardenvale Railway Station
Gardenvale railway station is located on the Sandringham line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the south-eastern Melbourne suburb of Brighton, and it opened on 10 December 1906. History Gardenvale opened on 10 December 1906, with the whole cost of providing the station met by local residents of the district. The origins of the name of the station, and the suburb itself, are uncertain, although it may have been inspired by nearby market gardens throughout the undulating countryside. The station has two side platforms, and is located in an unusual elevated position, located between the Nepean Highway and Martin Street, with access to the station from both. The rail bridge over Martin Street, which restored a link between both sections of the street, was constructed in 1928, with most of the cost being met by the Brighton and Caulfield councils, and local businesses. The electorate is surrounded by the other electoral districts of Prahran, Albert Park, Malvern, Oakleigh, Bentleigh and Brighton. Caulfield South is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 10 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Glen Eira local government area. Caulfield South recorded a population of 12,328 at the 2021 census. History In England, on 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy (1800–81) purchased of Port Phillip land at £1 per acre, sight unseen, under the terms of the short-lived Special Survey regulations. Sandringham Railway Line
The Sandringham railway line is a suburban railway line in Melbourne, Australia. It branches from other southeastern suburban rail lines (inferred as the " Caulfield group") at South Yarra station. It serves the City of Bayside, and small sections cover the Cities of Glen Eira, Port Phillip, Stonnington, and Yarra. Various sections of the track opened between 1857 and 1859, and in May 1919, the whole line was electrified. Infrastructure The line is double track throughout, although it runs alongside the Frankston, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines from Flinders Street to South Yarra, making a total of six tracks in this section. There are three platforms at Brighton Beach making it the only station to have three platforms on the Sandringham line (although the third platform is not in use). Rosstown Railway
The Rosstown Railway was a private railway in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, running between the current railway stations of Elsternwick, on the Sandringham line, and Oakleigh, on the Pakenham line. The line was built in the late 19th century by William Murray Ross, with the intention of transporting sugar beet to his sugar beet mill, and the refined product to the Port of Melbourne. When the mill failed to begin production, the line fell into disrepair without being used, and it was eventually dismantled, with the land being sold. Nepean Highway runs south from St Kilda Junction in Victoria, Australia to Portsea, close to the eastern shore of Port Phillip. It is the primary road route to central Melbourne from Melbourne's southern suburbs.
