Garbatella
Garbatella is an urban zone of Rome. It belongs to the Municipio VIII (ex-Municipio XI) of Rome ''comune'', Italy, in the Ostiense quarter of Rome. Its population counts nearly 45,000. History Garbatella was founded on February 18, 1920, on an estate bearing the same name, lying on a hill adjacent to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. The older section of the area is divided into project units ( it, lotto), each of them made of several buildings grouped together around a common garden, a design that was borrowed from the English Garden city movement. The garden serves as an informal meeting point for all the families that live in the buildings. The area expanded rapidly and by 1930 it had the highest population density in Rome. Ostiense is the 10th ''quartiere'' of Rome, identified by the initials Q. X. The toponym comes from the original name of the Porta San Paolo, a gate in the city walls of Rome, was , because it was located at the beginning of Via Ostiense. It now houses the Via Ostiense Museum. History In the late 9th century, a fortified settlement developed around the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls: the village took the name of ''Giovannipoli'' after Pope John VIII, who built it for defense purposes after a Saracen raid. Line B (Rome Metro)
Line B is a metro line serving Rome, Italy, and part of the Rome Metro. Despite its name, Line B was the first line to be built in the city. It crosses Rome diagonally from north-east, starting at Rebibbia and at Jonio stations, to south, terminating at Laurentina, in the EUR district. It crosses Line A at Termini station. The line has 26 stations and is shown in blue on Metro maps. Overview Its first service runs at 05:30 and its last at 23:30. From 18 January 2008, the last Friday and Saturday service runs at 1:30. Municipio VIII is an administrative subdivision of the city of Rome. It was first created by Rome's City Council on 11 March 2013 after the abolition of the former ''Municipio XI'' and it has a president who is elected during the mayoral elections. Subdivision Municipio VIII is divided into 9 localities: Municipal Government The President of the ''municipio'' is directly elected by citizens. The Council of the ''municipio'' is elected every five years, with a system under which voters express a direct choice for the President or an indirect choice voting for the party of the candidate's coalition. The garden city movement was a 20th century urban planning movement promoting satellite communities surrounding the central city and separated with greenbelts. These Garden Cities would contain proportionate areas of residences, industry, and agriculture. Ebenezer Howard first posited the idea in 1898 as a way to capture the primary benefits of the countryside and the city while avoiding the disadvantages presented by both. Along most of its route, the street has three lanes for each direction of movement.
