''Garay'' were traditional native warships of the Banguingui people in the Philippines. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were commonly used for piracy by the Banguingui and Iranun people against unarmed trading ships and raids on coastal settlements in the regions surrounding the Sulu Sea. History Most ''garay'' were built in the shipyards of Parang, Sulu in the late 18th century. During the early 19th century, Banguingui ''garay'' squadrons regularly plagued the straits of southern Palawan from the months of March to November each year. They raided coastal areas in northern Borneo for slaves as well as cut off trade into the Sultanate of Brunei. These attacks severely affected the economy of Brunei, leading to its decline. The Banguingui purportedly had a saying: "It is difficult to catch fish, but easy to catch Borneans." Leslie Andrew Garay
Leslie Andrew Garay (August 6, 1924 - August 19, 2016), born Garay László András, was an American botanist. He was the curator of the Oakes Ames Orchid Herbarium at Harvard University, where he succeeded Charles Schweinfurth in 1958. In 1957 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Life and work Garay was born in Hungary, and after the Second World War he emigrated first to Canada and then to the United States. He was a taxonomist and collector of orchids, particularly interested in the orchids of tropical America and Southeast Asia. His ideas were influential in orchid taxonomy, and he reorganized several genera, including ''Oncidium''. In addition to reclassification of various species into different genera, he defined a number of new genera including ''Chaubardiella'' in 1969 and '' Amesiella'' in 1972. Terminal de Transportación Pública Carlos Garay (''Carlos Garay Public Transportation Terminal''), formerly, Terminal de Carros Públicos Carlos Garay (''Carlos Garay Carros Públicos Terminal''), is a public transportation terminal for shared ride passengers and SITRAS bus system in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is located on the block bounded by Calle Vives, Calle Unión, Calle Victoria and Calle Mendez Vigo, in the Ponce Historic Zone, two blocks northwest of the main city square, Plaza Las Delicias. It opened in 1987. On a typical weekday, approximately 500 passengers on about 40 buses and shared-ride vehicles use the station. The building is an example of 1960s urban renewal.
