Given Name
A given name (also known as a forename or first name) is the part of a personal name quoted in that identifies a person, potentially with a middle name as well, and differentiates that person from the other members of a group (typically a family or clan) who have a common surname. The term ''given name'' refers to a name usually bestowed at or close to the time of birth, usually by the parents of the newborn. A ''Christian name'' is the first name which is given at baptism, in Christian custom. In informal situations, given names are often used in a familiar and friendly manner. In more formal situations, a person's surname is more commonly used. The idioms 'on a first-name basis' and 'being on first-name terms' refer to the familiarity inherent in addressing someone by their given name. By contrast, a surname (also known as a family name, last name, or ''gentile name, gentile'' name) is normally inherited and shared with other members of one's immediate family. Regnal names ...

The Belgariad
''The Belgariad'' is a five-book fantasy epic written by David Eddings, following the journey of protagonist Garion and his companions, first to recover a sacred stone, and later to use it against antagonist Torak. It was a bestseller from the first book in the series. It has been called both the "last gasp" of traditional fantasy and "one of the founding megasagas" of modern fantasy. Background David Eddings, who had been writing adventure and thriller genres, has said he developed the idea for a fantasy series somewhat "cynically" after noticing how many times J. R. R. Tolkien's ''The Lord of the Rings'' series had been reprinted. He had an epiphany, realizing the fantasy genre might be very lucrative and was currently "underserved". He mapped out an imaginary world to use in developing the story for the Belgariad. He has also said he was influenced by reading medieval epics and by Lester del Rey's editorial input. In later works he acknowledged his wife, Leigh Eddings, as an ...

Gareth (given Name)
Gareth is a Welsh masculine given name. The name's popularity in Wales may be as a hypocorism of ''Geraint'', which itself became popular after the famous hero and king of Dumnonia. The modern name appears in '' Le Morte d'Arthur'' by Thomas Malory, in which it belonged to Sir Gareth, a brother of Sir Gawain and one of the Knights of the Round Table. Malory either based the name on ''Gahariet'' (a name found in French Arthurian texts) or on the Welsh language word ''gwaredd'', meaning "gentleness". Garaidh is commonly rendered in English as Gary.Patrick Hanks & Flavia Hodges, ''A Dictionary of First Names'', Oxford University Press (1990) It is also commonly (esp. in Scotland) spelled Garry. However, the name Gary is of Germanic origin (from ''gar'' meaning 'spear'). Although visually similar, most occurrences of -gar(r)y in place-names are unrelated to the name. In place-names, -gar(r)y is usually derived from one of the following elements: * Old Norse ''gerði'', originally meaning ''enclosure'' but later on ''land around a dwelling, pasture'', e.g. ''Geàrraidh na h-Aibhne'' GarynahineCox, Richard ''The Settlement Names of Lewis'' C ...
