Ganga (1960 Film)
''Ganga'' is a 1960 Bengali drama film directed by Rajen Tarafdar. This film narrates the life of river fishermen. This film was based on the 1946 same name novel of Samaresh Basu and made under Cine Art Productions Pvt. Ltd. banner. The music of this film was composed by Salil Chowdhury. Plot Panchu is a fisherman. His young nephew Bilash joins the profession who is very short tempered. He wants to go to sea and capture fish there. But Panchu is scared of it and does not want to allow Bilash to do so. He arranges the marriage of Bilash with Gardi who used to do fishing in Ichamati river. Rajen Tarafdar
Rajen Tarafdar (7 July 1917 – 23 November 1987) was an Indian film director, actor, and screenwriter. He was the recipient of two National Awards and two BFJA Awards. He graduated from the Government College of Art & Craft in Calcutta in 1940 with a degree in popular arts. He was initially a graphic designer in an advertising agency before devoting himself to cinema. Salil Chowdhury
Salil Chowdhury (19 November 1925 – 5 September 1995) was an Indian music director, songwriter, lyricist, writer and poet who predominantly composed for Bengali, Hindi and Malayalam films. He composed music for films in 13 languages. This includes over 75 Hindi films, 41 Bengali films, 27 Malayalam films, and a few Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Odia and Assamese films. His musical ability was widely recognised and acknowledged in the Indian film industry. He was an accomplished composer and arranger who was proficient in several musical instruments, including flute, the piano, and the esraj. He was also widely acclaimed and admired for his inspirational and original poetry in Bengali. The first Bengali film for which Chowdhury composed music was ''Paribortan'', released in 1949. Samaresh Basu
Samaresh Basu (11 December 1924 – 12 March 1988) was a writer in modern Bengali literature, known for his versatility and vast range of themes. He wrote under the pen name ''Kalkut''. Basu was awarded the 1980 Sahitya Akademi Award in Bengali, by Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, for his novel, ''Shamba''. He won the 1983 Filmfare Awards for Best Story for ''Namkeen''. Biography Basu was born on 11 December, 1924 in Bikrampur, Dhaka (present day Bangladesh). He married Gauri Basu in 1942. Gyanesh Mukherjee
Gyanesh Mukherjee (5 July 1926 – 8 May 2008) was a Bengali actor, director and theater personality. Career He was involved with Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). In his film career, Mukherjee worked with number of famous directors like Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen and Tapan Sinha. Since late 50s to 70s, he played prolific role in cinema as well as theater. Ruma Guha Thakurta (21 November 1934 – 3 June 2019) was an Indian actress and singer primarily associated with Bengali language films. She founded Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958. Early life Ruma Guha Thakurta was born on 3 November 1934 to Satyen Ghosh (Monty Ghosh) and singer Sati Devi. Her family was culturally inclined to Brahmo Samaj, a societal component of Brahmoism. Sati was a trained vocalist and a niece of Bijoya Ray, the wife of Satyajit Ray. Ruma Guha Thakurta began as a dancer. Later, she went to Almora Academy of Uday Shankar at Lahore to study dance. She started training in music at Swarabitan in Kolkata, which had been established by her parents. In later years, she studied under Abdul Rehman Khan of Patiala gharana, the Ustad of Nirmla Devi and Lakshmi Shankar in Bombay.
