Galärvarvskyrkogården
Galärvarvskyrkogården (literally Galley Shipyard Cemetery) is a cemetery on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm, Sweden. It has about 1,300 burial sites and an area of approximately 0.9 hectares. History Galärvarvskyrkogården in Djurgården was established in 1742 and was the last in a series of landscaped cemeteries for naval use. Recently, an encircling wall and a memorial grove has been built. In 1963 the remains of ten men and two women found on the salvaged wreckage of ''Vasa (ship), Vasa'' was buried here. Layout It has about 1,300 burial sites and an area of approximately 0.9 hectares. The cemetery, which is strongly influenced by naval life both in individual monuments and symbols as well as inscriptions, has a chapel and a bell tower. Hilma Af Klint
Hilma af Klint (; 26 October 1862 – 21 October 1944) was a Swedish artist and mysticism, mystic whose paintings are considered among the first Abstract art, abstract works known in Western art history. A considerable body of her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Wassily Kandinsky, Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Malevich and Piet Mondrian, Mondrian. She belonged to a group called "The Five", comprising a circle of women inspired by Theosophy, who shared a belief in the importance of trying to contact the so-called "Masters of the Ancient Wisdom, High Masters"—often by way of séances. Her paintings, which sometimes resemble diagrams, were a visual representation of complex spiritual ideas. Anders Franzén
Carl Gustaf Anders Franzén (23 July 1918 – 8 December 1993) was a Swedish marine technician and an amateur naval archaeologist. He is most famous for having located the 1628 wreck of the Swedish galleon '' Vasa'' in 1956 and participated in her salvage 1959–1961. He also participated in the exploration for the wrecks of Swedish warships '' Kronan'', ''Riksäpplet'' and '' Resande Man'' as well as Gustav Vasa's flagship ''Lybska Svan''. Biography Franzén studied naval architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), but instead developed a strong interest for history and never graduated. He took employment with BP and later changed to the Swedish Naval Administration (which was a single-service forerunner to the Defence Materiel Administration, FMV) where he became an expert on oil and fuels. Pauline Brunius
Pauline Brunius, née ''Emma Maria Pauline Lindstedt'' (10 February 1881 in Stockholm – 30 March 1954 in Stockholm) was a Swedish stage and film actor, screenwriter and film and theatre director. She was the managing director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre from 1938 to 1948. Biography Born in 1881, Brunius became a ballet student in 1891, but ended her ballet studies in favor of spoken drama. She was engaged at the theatre Olympiateatern in 1902. Jointly with her spouse ( John W. Allan Vougt
Allan Georg Fredrik Vougt (28 April 1895 – 24 January 1953) was a Swedish Social Democratic politician and minister for defence 1945 - 1951. He was also the Social Democratic group leader in the Second House. He remained minister until the Social Democratic-Agrarian Union coalition government was formed despite criticism from Tage Erlander, the prime minister. He was the Governor of Malmöhus County from 1951 to his death in 1953. Vougt was also a journalist and served as the editor-in-chief for the daily newspaper ''Arbetet'' during Hitler's occupation of Denmark and Norway, where he stated that Germany seemed "predestined to occupy a dominant position in a united Europe", a position which he claimed "no reasonable man, here in Scandinavia, would contest.". Birgit Tengroth
Birgit Tengroth (13 July 1915 – 21 September 1983) was a Swedish film actress. She appeared in more than 40 films between 1926 and 1950. Biography Tengroth debuted in Sven Jerring's radio show 'Barnens Brevlåda' together with her friend Sickan Carlsson at the age of 10. She studied at Royal Opera's ballet school 1926-31. David Harald Vilgot Sjöman (2 December 1924 – 9 April 2006) was a Swedish writer and film director. His films deal with controversial issues of social class, morality, and sexual taboos, combining the emotionally tortured characters of Ingmar Bergman with the avant garde style of the French New Wave. Alf Sjöberg
Sven Erik Alf Sjöberg (21 June 1903 – 17 April 1980) was a Sweden, Swedish theatre director, theatre and film director. He won the Palme d'Or, Grand Prix du Festival at the Cannes Film Festival twice: in 1946 for ''Torment (1944 film), Torment'' ( sv, Hets) (part of an eleven-way tie), and in 1951 for his film ''Miss Julie (1951 film), Miss Julie'' ( sv, Fröken Julie) (an adaptation of August Strindberg's play which tied with Vittorio De Sica's ''Miracle in Milan''). Despite his success with those films, Sjöberg was foremost a stage director, perhaps the greatest at Dramaten (alongside first Olof Molander and later Ingmar Bergman). Catalina Affair
The Catalina affair ( sv, Catalinaaffären) was a military confrontation and Cold War-era diplomatic crisis in June 1952, in which Soviet Air Force fighter jets shot down two Swedish aircraft over international waters in the Baltic Sea. The first aircraft to be shot down was an unarmed Swedish Air Force Tp 79, a derivative of the Douglas DC-3, carrying out radio and radar signals intelligence-gathering for the National Defence Radio Establishment (''Försvarets radioanstalt'', FRA). None of the crew of eight survived. The second aircraft to be shot down was a Swedish Air Force Tp 47, a Catalina flying boat, involved in the search and rescue operation for the missing DC-3. Stig Erik Leopold Anderson (25 January 1931 – 12 September 1997), better known as Stikkan Anderson, was a Swedish music manager, lyricist and music publisher. He was the co-founder of Polar Music, and is best known for managing the Swedish pop band ABBA. Early life Stig Anderson was born on 25 January 1931 in Hova, Sweden, the son of a single mother named Ester. Anderson began his career as a chemistry and mathematics teacher at a primary school, by taking night classes after leaving school at the age of 15. Having written his first song at age 16, Anderson soon entered the Swedish popular music scene, becoming a music producer, manager and occasional performer.
