Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt, (September 6, 1817 – September 19, 1893) was a politician and a father of the Canadian Confederation. Early life Galt was born in Chelsea, England on September 6, 1817. He was the son of John Galt, a Scottish novelist and colonizer, and Elizabeth ( née Tilloch) Galt. His mother was the only daughter of Alexander Tilloch, the journalist and inventor who founded ''Philosophical Magazine''. He was a first cousin of Sir Hugh Allan of Montreal, the owner of the Allan Shipping Line which was the largest privately owned shipping empire in the world in 1882. He was educated at Reading School. Career He was a member of the Great Coalition government in the Province of Canada that secured Confederation between 1864 and 1867. Edith Wilson ( Bolling, formerly Galt; October 15, 1872 – December 28, 1961) was the first lady of the United States from 1915 to 1921 and the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson. She married the widower Wilson in December 1915, during his first term as president. Edith Wilson played an influential role in President Wilson's administration following the severe stroke he suffered in October 1919. For the remainder of her husband's presidency, she managed the office of the president, a role she later described as a "stewardship," and determined which communications and matters of state were important enough to bring to the attention of the bedridden president. Elliott Torrance Galt (24 May 1850 - 15 May 1928) was a Canadian businessman and developer. The grandson of the novelist John Galt and only child of the politician Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt (1817-1893) by his wife Elliott (d. 1850 shortly after giving birth to her son), daughter of the entrepreneur John Torrance, Galt was educated at Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Lower Canada, before studying at Harrow and at Tours in France. Galt's business career began in 1883, following a period in the 1870s as clerk to various Montreal businessmen including John Rose and having held the position of secretary to Edgar Dewdney, Indian commissioner for the Northwest Territories, which led to Galt's appointment as assistant Indian commissioner at Regina. Jimmy Galt
James Hill Galt (11 August 1885 – 17 November 1935) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a left half for Rangers and Everton. Club career Galt played with Rangers for eight years between 1906 and 1914. He made 240 appearances and scored six goals for the club. During his time at Ibrox he won three Scottish league championships, two Glasgow Cups and three Glasgow Merchants Charity Cups, as well as the Edinburgh Exhibition Cup in 1908. Galt swapped Glasgow for Merseyside in 1914 and joined Everton. He made 36 appearances for the ''Toffees'' and scored four goals. John Galt (novelist)
John Galt (; 2 May 1779 – 11 April 1839) was a Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. Galt has been called the first political novelist in the English language, due to being the first novelist to deal with issues of the Industrial Revolution. Galt was the first superintendent of the Canada Company (1826-1829). The company had been formed to populate a part of what is now Southern Ontario (then known as Upper Canada) in the first half of the 19th century; it was later called "the most important single attempt at settlement in Canadian history". In 1829, Galt was recalled to Great Britain for mismanagement of the Canada Company (particularly incompetent bookkeeping), and was later jailed for failing to pay his son's tuition. Malcolm Patrick Galt C.S.Sp. (9 July 1929 – 16 October 2022) was the Roman Catholic bishop of the diocese of Bridgetown, Barbados from 23 April 1995 to 31 May 2005. Galt was born on 9 July 1929 in Trinidad and Tobago. He completed his seminary work in philosophy at Marian University in Montreal and theology at the Holy Ghost Missionary College, Kimmage Manor, Dublin in Ireland and was ordained a priest on 10 July 1955 as a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, a Catholic religious order also known as the Holy Ghost Fathers. Maud Galt (c. 1620 c. 1670) was a lesbian accused of witchcraft in Kilbarchan, Scotland. Biography Maud Galt lived in Kilbarchan, Scotland in the mid 17th century. She hid her sexual identity by marrying John Dickie, a wright. The couple lived with their two servants. Galt had a relationship with one of her servants, Agnes Mitchell. She was accused of witchcraft when Mitchell lodged a complaint against her employer at a Kirk Session in September 1649. Thomas Galt (September 12, 1805 – September 12, 1857) was an American Presbyterian minister and Abolitionism in the United States, abolitionist who organized two Presbyterian churches in Sangamon County, Illinois. He was Vice-President of the Illinois Anti-Slavery Society and a conductor of the Underground Railroad. William Wylie Galt (December 19, 1919 – May 29, 1944) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in World War II. Biography Galt was a native of Geyser in Judith Basin County, Montana. After serving in ROTC at Montana State University, he joined the Army from Stanford, Montana in June 1942. He married Patricia Ann Sandbo on July 24, 1942. He was wounded while serving in North Africa in 1943 and again at Monte Cassino on January 27, 1944. It only kept him sidelined for a three weeks.
