Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin (December 22, 1770 – May 6, 1840) was an emigre Russian nobility, Russian aristocrat and Catholic Church, Catholic priest known as The Apostle of the Alleghenies and also in the United States as Prince Galitzin. He was a member of the House of Golitsyn. Since 2005, he has been under consideration for canonization by the Catholic Church. His current title is Servant of God, granted by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. Early life Gallitzin was born into nobility on December 22, 1770 at The Hague. His father, Prince Dmitri Alekseyevich Gallitzin, Dimitri Alexeievich, the Imperial Russia, Russian ambassador to the Netherlands, was an intimate friend of Voltaire and a follower of Diderot. His mother was the Prussian Countess Adelheid Amalie Gallitzin, Adelheid Amalie von Schmettau, the daughter of Field Marshall Samuel von Schmettau. Gallitzin is a borough in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is bordered by Gallitzin Township and Tunnelhill, all of which sit astride the Eastern continental divide. Tunnel Hill and Gallitzin both are pierced by railroad tunnels shortening the necessary ascent for rails crossing the Allegheny Front onto the Allegheny Plateau which encompasses the towns' terrains. Topping the gaps of the Allegheny, the area is one of only five major breaks in the Appalachians allowing east–west transportation corridors before the advent of 20th century technologies. Gallitzin Township is a township in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. The township nearly surrounds but is separate from Gallitzin borough. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 1,324. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography The township is located in eastern Cambria County at , and is bordered by Blair County to the east. The borough of Gallitzin and part of the borough of Tunnelhill are next to the southeast corner of the township, but are separate municipalities. Gallitzin State Forest is a Pennsylvania State Forest in Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry District #6. The main offices are located in Ebensburg in Cambria County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The forest is located on in two tracts. The largest tract of is the Babcock Division in northern Somerset and northwestern Bedford Counties. The other, smaller tract of is in northern Cambria and Indiana Counties. District #6 also includes Blair County. Gallitzin State Forest was named to honor Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin.
