Gallinger Municipal Hospital Psychopathic Ward
The Gallinger Municipal Hospital Psychopathic Ward consisted of three hospital buildings in the Southeastern Quadrant of Washington, D.C. History These buildings were built in 1920–1923 to the Colonial Revival design of Washington architect Snowden Ashford. Local contractor George H. Wynne constructed the buildings for $766,200. By 1924 it had been featured in the journal ''Modern Hospital'' and was also described in 1928 in the standard text ''The American Hospital of the Twentieth Century.'' The hospital was named for Senator Jacob Harold Gallinger of New Hampshire, who sponsored the bill for its construction in the Senate. It was renamed D.C. General Hospital in 1953, and closed in 2001. Construction of a prison on the site was planned in 1986, with preservationists contesting the plan until 1989. The District of Columbia General Hospital was a hospital located in Washington, D.C. It was operational from 1806 to its controversial closing by mayor Anthony A. Williams in 2001, as the city was trying to cut costs while recovering from bankruptcy. At the time of its closure, it was the only public hospital located within the District. History The hospital was founded as the Washington Infirmary in 1806, using a $2,000 grant from Congress, and was located at 6th and M Street NW. Originally located in Judiciary Square it moved to 19th and Massachusetts, SE in 1846. At the turn of the century, efforts to open a new public hospital at 14th and Upshur were opposed by residents. The final hospital site was first developed in the 1840s as a consolidated hospital, poorhouse and workhouse complex known as the Washington Asylum Hospital. Jacob Harold Gallinger (March 28, 1837 – August 17, 1918), was a United States senator from New Hampshire who served as President pro tempore of the Senate in 1912 and 1913. Early life and career Jacob Harold Gallinger was born in Cornwall, Ontario, British Canada on March 28, 1837. His father's family were German and his mother's was German American. He was home-schooled from an early age. Gallinger moved to the U.S. at an early age and first worked as a printer. Medical career Gallinger studied medicine at the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical Institute and graduated at the head of his class in May 1858. He studied abroad for three years, writing and working as a printer to cover his expenses. In 1861, he returned to the United States and engaged in the practice of homeopathic medicine and surgery in Keene, New Hampshire before moving to Concord, New Hampshire in April 1862.
