Gallieni Massif
The Gallieni Massif (french: Massif Gallieni) is a mountain range in Grande Terre, the main island of Kerguelen in the French Southern Territories Overseas collectivity, zone of the Southern Indian Ocean. Geography This range is located in the Gallieni Peninsula, fringing the southern coast. The highest point of the massif is the high Mont Ross, a stratovolcano that is also the highest point of the Kerguelen Archipelago. Other important summits of the range are high Petit Ross, high Dôme du Père Gaspard and the high Grand Gendarme. The range also includes a number of glacial formations, among which the Buffon Glacier, the La Pilatte Glacier ,the Néves Glacier and the Sélé Glacier deserve mention. Morbihan Gulf
The Golfe du Morbihan (Gulf of Morbihan) is a bay on the eastern coast of Grande Terre, the largest of the Kerguelen islands. It forms a deep and broad notch in the central section of the island. Description It is a relatively protected maritime space constituting a natural shelter for the ships and on the banks of which were established the stations of and Port-aux-Français. The gulf of Morbihan is strewn with many islands and islets. It was thus so called by Raymond Rallier du Baty at the time of its forwardings of the beginning of the 20th century in the honour of the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany (Kerguelen was Breton, and many of the features in the islands have Breton names). "Morbihan" derives directly from the Breton language, Breton name which is ''Ar Morbihan'', meaning 'the little sea' (Compare the Welsh language, Welsh ''y môr bychan''), as opposed to the Ocean outside. Stratovolcano
A stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano, is a conical volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava and tephra. Unlike shield volcanoes, stratovolcanoes are characterized by a steep profile with a summit crater and periodic intervals of explosive eruptions and effusive eruptions, although some have collapsed summit craters called calderas. The lava flowing from stratovolcanoes typically cools and hardens before spreading far, due to high viscosity. The magma forming this lava is often felsic, having high-to-intermediate levels of silica (as in rhyolite, dacite, or andesite), with lesser amounts of less-viscous mafic magma. Baie Larose
Baie Larose, or Larose Bay in English, is a bay of Grande Terre, the main island of the subantarctic Kerguelen archipelago, a French territory in the southern Indian Ocean. It is important as a breeding site for seabirds, especially penguins. Description The bay lies on the southern coast of Grande Terre, west of Mont Ross and Gallieni Massif, and encompassing the mouth of Fjord Larose and the tilted monolith known as the ''Doigt de Sainte Anne'' (Saint Anne's Finger). Important Bird Area The bay, with part of the south-western slopes of Mont Ross, has been identified as a 20 km2 Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because of its breeding seabirds. Of the penguins, there are some 21,500 pairs of kings, 500 pairs of gentoos, 6000 pairs of macaronis and 4000 pairs of eastern rockhoppers. In geology, a massif ( or ) is a section of a planet's crust that is demarcated by faults or flexures. In the movement of the crust, a massif tends to retain its internal structure while being displaced as a whole. The term also refers to a group of mountains formed by such a structure. In mountaineering and climbing literature, a massif is frequently used to denote the main mass of an individual mountain. The massif is a smaller structural unit of the crust than a tectonic plate, and is considered the fourth-largest driving force in geomorphology. Mont Ross
Mont Ross is a stratovolcano, the highest mountain in the Kerguelen Islands at . It is located in the Gallieni Massif, at the end of the Gallieni Peninsula, east of Baie Larose on the main island of Grande Terre. The volcano is composed primarily of trachybasalt and was active during the late Pleistocene. History Mont Ross was named after explorer Sir James Clark Ross. The first human being to set foot on its summit was French military engineer Henri Journoud, using a helicopter, in the early 1960s. The mountain was, however, first climbed in 1975 by Jean Afanassieff and Patrick Cordier, the last French mountain to be climbed.
