Gallant Bloom Handicap
The Gallant Bloom Handicap is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares that are three years old and older run over a distance of furlongs on the dirt held annually in late September at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. History The event is named in honor of Gallant Bloom who won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Two-Year-Old Filly champion of 1968, the 1969 American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and the 1969 American Champion Older Female Horse. In ''The Blood-Horse'' ranking of the top 100 U.S. thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century, Gallant Bloom is ranked #79. The event was inaugurated on 30 August 1992 at Saratoga Race Course as a three-year-old fillies race over six furlongs. and was won by the Canadian bred filly Apelia who defeated the Grade I Frizette Stakes winner Preach by lengths. Belmont Park
Belmont Park is a major thoroughbred horse racing facility in the northeastern United States, located in Elmont, New York, just east of the New York City limits. It was opened on May 4, 1905. It is operated by the non-profit New York Racing Association, as are the Aqueduct Racetrack and Saratoga Race Course. The group was formed in 1955 as the Greater New York Association to assume the assets of the individual associations that ran Belmont, Aqueduct, Saratoga, and the now-defunct Jamaica Race Course. Belmont Park is typically open for racing from late April through mid-July (known as the Spring meet), and again from mid-September through late October (the Fall meet). It is widely known as the home of the Belmont Stakes in early June, regarded as the "Test of the Champion", the third leg of the Triple Crown.
