Ashgabat or Asgabat ( tk, Aşgabat, ; fa, عشق‌آباد, translit='Ešqābād, formerly named Poltoratsk ( rus, Полтора́цк, p=pəltɐˈratsk) between 1919 and 1927), is the capital and the largest city of Turkmenistan. It lies between the Karakum Desert and the Kopetdag mountain range in Central Asia, near the Iran-Turkmenistan border. The city was founded in 1881 on the basis of an Ahal Teke tribal village, and made the capital of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924. Much of the city was destroyed by the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, but has since been extensively rebuilt under the rule of Saparmurat Niyazov's "White City" urban renewal project, resulting in monumental projects sheathed in costly white marble. The Soviet-era Karakum Canal runs through the city, carrying waters from the Amu Darya from east to west. Oguzkhan Presidential Palace
Oguzhan Palace ( tm, Oguz han köşgi, Огуз хан көшги) is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of Turkmenistan, located on Independence Square in the capital city of Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. It has been the site of the presidential headquarters and home of the president of Turkmenistan since the late 1990s. President Saparmurat Niyazov lived in the palace from 1997 until his death in 2006, where he also died. The new building was built in May 2011, replacing the smaller Türkmenbaşy Palace located nearby. The Palace is part of a larger complex also containing the ''Prezident Köşgi'' (Presidential Palace) which is on the west side of the complex bordered by the Independence Square. Monument to the Turkmenistan Constitution ( tk, Türkmenistanyň Konstitusiýa binasy) is a monument located in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. Its height of 185 meters makes it the second-tallest building in Turkmenistan. Independence Square, Ashgabat
Independence Square () is a square in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. The identification number of the square is 2000. Development By June 2009, the square was renovated, with new fountains, original lamps and benches, being built over the course of six months. In October 2014, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov acquainted with the progress of landscaping on the square, taking a bike ride through the central part of the square. In September 2021, in honor of the 30th anniversary of Turkmen independence, the largest flat screen tv Central Asia was placed on the government tribune. It coincided with the complete renovation of the government tribune. On September 16, a new complex of the State Tribune was opened, built on Kopetdag Avenue in the south of Ashgabat.
