Galen Cole
Galen Cole (November 29, 1925 – January 9, 2020) was an American World War II veteran and philanthropist. He managed the Cole Land Transportation Museum, the Walking Sticks for Veterans program, and organizes numerous activities and charity drives for veterans and related causes in his native Bangor, Maine. Background Galen was born in 1925 to Albert J. "Allie" Cole, founder of the Cole Express delivery company, and Amy Stone, a schoolteacher. He was the fifth child of seven born to the couple. From a young age he was interested in trucks and enjoyed spending time with the drivers employed by his father. Galen would accompany drivers as they delivered Sears & Roebuck mail order catalogs to Deer Isle. Maine School Administrative District 63
Regional School Unit 63 (RSU 63), formerly Maine School Administrative District 63, is an operating school district within Penobscot County, Maine, covering the towns of Holden, Eddington, and Clifton. Background There are three schools in the district. Two are kindergarten-through-fourth grade elementary schools and are located in the towns of Holden and Eddington. The Eddington school also serves children from Clifton. The middle school is also located in Holden and services all three towns through eighth grade. It also contains CSD 8, or 'Airline', which serves the towns of Amherst, Aurora, Great Pond and Osborne. Together, these two districts are referred to as AOS 81. Half-track
A half-track is a civilian or military vehicle with regular wheels at the front for steering and continuous tracks at the back to propel the vehicle and carry most of the load. The purpose of this combination is to produce a vehicle with the cross-country capabilities of a tank and the handling of a wheeled vehicle. Performance The main advantage of half-tracks over wheeled vehicles is that the tracks reduce the pressure on any given area of the ground by spreading the vehicle's weight over a larger area, which gives it greater mobility over soft terrain like mud and snow, while they do not require the complex steering mechanisms of fully tracked vehicles, relying instead on their front wheels to direct the vehicle, augmented in some cases by track braking controlled by the steering wheel. William Westmoreland
William Childs Westmoreland (March 26, 1914 – July 18, 2005) was a United States Army general, most notably commander of United States forces during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968. He served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1968 to 1972. Westmoreland adopted a strategy of attrition against the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army, attempting to drain them of manpower and supplies. He also made use of the United States' edge in artillery and air power, both in tactical confrontations and in relentless strategic bombing of North Vietnam. Nevertheless, public support for the war eventually diminished, especially after the Battle of Khe Sanh and the Tet Offensive in 1968. By the time he was re-assigned as Army Chief of Staff, United States military forces in Vietnam had reached a peak of 535,000 personnel.
