Gala RFC
Gala Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team based in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. Founded in 1875, it plays its home games at Netherdale. The team currently competes in Scottish National League Division One, the second tier of Scottish club rugby, and the Border League (the oldest established rugby union league in the world). Early history The club was formed at a time of change in Galashiels, and the Borders in general, with the increasingly industrial textile industry. Cricket was played by the new influx of workers (particularly Yorkshire) and a winter alternate was needed, so a 'Football club' was formed in 1876. Although named a 'football' club they only ever played rugby union football and never association football. Rugby Union Football is now generally referred to as rugby, but at the time it was still commonly regarded as a code of football, as it technically still is. Berwick Sevens
Berwick Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Berwick RFC, in Berwick upon Tweed, England. The Berwick Sevens was the last of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated, in 1983; but the first in England. The main Borders Sevens tournaments combine in a Kings of the Sevens league; and the Berwick Sevens are now part of this league. 2019's Berwick Sevens was played on 21 April 2019. Watsonians won the final, beating Boroughmuir 24–17. Invited Sides Various sides have been invited to play in the Berwick Sevens tournament throughout the years. Stoke RFC made it to the final of the tournament in 1984, only to be beaten by Kelso. Peter Brown (rugby Union)
Peter Brown (born 16 December 1941) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. He played No. 8 and Lock. Rugby Union career Amateur career Brown played for West of Scotland and Gala. Brown was dubbed "the man on the coathanger" in his playing days because of his unusually square shoulders inherited from his maternal grandmother's side of the family. He kicked many goals which is very unusual for a forward. Provincial career Brown played for Glasgow District. International career Brown captained Scotland 10 times in his 27 internationals (1964–73). He is unique in captaining Scotland to 3 victories over England and his 67 international points making him Scotland's all time highest scoring rugby forward. Geoff Cross
Geoffrey Dominic Sebastian Cross (born 11 December 1982) is a Scottish former rugby union player. He played as a tight-head prop for the Border Reivers, Edinburgh and London Irish. He won 40 caps for Scotland between 2009 and 2014. He is also a qualified doctor. Career Club Cross entered professional rugby when he joined Border Reivers in 2003 from Heriot's after having played for Scotland under-21 that year, including being at tight-head in the team who beat England 33–22 at Newbury in the final match of the age group's world championship. In December 2006 Cross moved from the Border Reivers to Edinburgh on loan until the end of the season, and his debut for the capital city's team followed later that month in the Celtic League game against Glasgow Warriors at Hughenden. Scotland National Rugby Union Team
The Scotland national rugby union team represents Scotland in men's international rugby union and is administered by the Scottish Rugby Union. The team takes part in the annual Six Nations Championship and participates in the Rugby World Cup, which takes place every four years. As of 4 December 2022, Scotland are 7th in the World Rugby Rankings. The history of the team extends back to 1871 when the Scottish rugby team played their first official test match, winning 1–0 against England at Raeburn Place. Scotland competed in the Five Nations from the inaugural tournament in 1883, winning it 14 times outright—including the last Five Nations in 1999—and sharing it another 8. Peter Dods
Peter Dods (born 6 January 1958) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. His regular playing position was Fullback. Rugby union career Amateur career Dods played for Gala at fullback. Provincial career Dods was capped by South of Scotland. He played for the Reds Trial side in their match against Blues Trial on 3 January 1987. International career Dods won his first Scotland 'B' cap against Ireland 'B' on 1 December 1979. Dods made his international debut against Ireland in the opening match of the 1983 Five Nations. It was a largely disappointing championship for Scotland, but Dods scored 11 points in a 22–12 win over England to avoid the wooden spoon. Nathan Hines
Nathan Hines (born 29 November 1976) is an Australian-born former rugby union and rugby league footballer. He played at international level for Scotland, winning 77 caps, and at club level for Edinburgh, Perpignan, and Clermont Auvergne among others. He also played rugby league. Early life Hines was born in Wagga Wagga, NSW. He attended Berkeley Vale Community High School from 1989 to 1994 and was a regular feature in the school's first XIII rugby league team. He played his club football for the Berkeley Vale Panthers Junior Rugby League Club and was part of the club's first ever Premiership winning side (U/15s – defeated Woy Woy in 1991) playing alongside future NRL player Paul Stringer. Derek Bolton White (born 30 January 1958) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. His regular playing position are Flanker and Number 8. Early life White was born on 30 January 1958 in Haddington, Scotland. He was educated at Dunbar Grammar School. Gregor Townsend
Gregor Peter John Townsend, (born 26 April 1973) is a Scottish rugby union coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of the Scotland national team having previously been an assistant coach from 2009 to 2012. As a player, he won 82 caps for Scotland and two for the British and Irish Lions. He is a former coach of Glasgow Warriors and was a player-coach for Border Reivers. As well as in Scotland, he played club rugby in Australia, England, France and South Africa. As coach of Scotland, his team won at Twickenham for the first time in 38 years in 2021. Townsend was selected as attack coach for the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa. Townsend was awarded an MBE in 1999 for services to rugby. Walkerburn Sevens
Walkerburn Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Walkerburn RFC, in Walkerburn, Scotland. The Walkerburn Sevens was the sixth of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated, in 1911, after the bigger events of the Border Sevens spring circuit. The Walkerburn Sevens is traditionally the last tournament of the Sevens season. Although other Sevens events were to join the Borders Sevens Circuit later, the Walkerburn Sevens has kept its view as a finale from the other tournaments. The other Borders Sevens tournaments combine in a Kings of the Sevens league; the Walkerburn tournament is called the ''Prince of the Sevens''. 2019's Walkerburn Sevens will be played on 25 May. Kings Of The Sevens
The Borders Sevens Circuit is a series of rugby sevens tournaments held annually in the Scottish Borders. Originally the circuit consisted of 5 tournaments; Langholm Sevens being the last added in 1908. It is the oldest Sevens circuit in the world; the first Sevens tournament outside Scotland - bar two single Sevens matches in Chorley, England in 1888 and 1889 - was held in the Scottish expatriate city of Dunedin in New Zealand in 1889 and there was no other Sevens tournament clusters elsewhere.Bath, ''Scotland Rugby Miscellany'', p82 The main circuit has now grown to 11 tournaments; 10 in Scotland and 1 - the Berwick Sevens - in England. Selkirk Sevens
Selkirk Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Selkirk RFC, in Selkirk, Scotland. This was one of a group of Sevens tournaments instated after the First World War extending the original Borders Spring Circuit. The Selkirk Sevens began in 1919. The Selkirk Sevens is part of the Kings of the Sevens championship run by the Border League. 2020's Selkirk Sevens will be played on 9 May 2020.
