Gainsborough, Ipswich
Gainsborough is an area of Ipswich, in the Ipswich district, in the county of Suffolk, England. It was named after the artist Thomas Gainsborough of Sudbury, who lived in Ipswich for several years. He was noted for visiting the banks of the Orwell in this area. Gainsborough Lane Gainsborough Estate The estate was a public housing development whose construction was started in 1926 and continued into the 1930s. It comprises largely of two storey terraced and semi-detached dwellings. The road layout is a hybrid of both grids and spoke and wheel plan. Gainsborough Library In 2008-9 Suffolk County Council built a new library on the site of the previous library located in Clapgate Lane. This is a steel frame structure with decorative stainless steel circular cladding around an atrium entrance. The building won the RIBA East 'Spirit of Ingenuity' award. Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough (14 May 1727 (baptised) – 2 August 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Along with his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes. Despite being a prolific portrait painter, Gainsborough gained greater satisfaction from his landscapes. He is credited (with Richard Wilson) as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school. Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy.
