Dennis Gahagan (born c.1817) was an immigrant in the Mexican Pueblo de San Diego in territorial California, and early settler in the City of San Diego in the new U.S. state of California. History Mexican–American War Dennis Gahagan was born c. 1817 in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States in the early 1840s. He joined the U.S. Army, which was recruiting for the Mexican–American War. He arrived in San Diego by 1849 as a soldier with the First U.S. Artillery (Magruder's Battery). He and his fellow troops fought and patrolled in the Southern California countryside during the war. U.S. territorial period In 1849 Gahagan was elected U.S. Judge of the 1st Instance of the District of San Diego. From 1849 to 1850 Gahagan was an Alcalde (Mayor) of San Diego. Helen Gahagan Douglas (born Helen Mary Gahagan; November 25, 1900 – June 28, 1980) was an American actress and politician. Her career included success on Broadway, as a touring opera singer, and in Hollywood films. Her portrayal of the villain in the 1935 movie ''She'' inspired Disney's Evil Queen in ''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'' (1937). In politics, she was the third woman and first Democratic woman elected to Congress from California; her election made California one of the first two states (along with Illinois) to elect female members to the House from both parties. In the 1950 United States Senate election in California, she unsuccessfully ran for the United States Senate, losing to Republican Richard Nixon. The campaign became symbolic of modern political vitriol, as both Gahagan's primary opponent Manchester Boddy and Nixon referred to her as "pink right down to her underwear", suggesting Communist sympathies. John Gahagan
John Gahagan (born 24 August 1958) is a Scottish former footballer, who played as a left winger. Gahagan spent most of his career with Motherwell, spending twelve seasons with the Fir Park club, either side of spells with Clydebank latterly Morton. During his time at Fir Park, Gahagan picked up two Scottish Football League First Division titles. A fully qualified SFA coach, Gahagan worked as a football development officer in Clackmannanshire before becoming an after-dinner speaker, winning the MBN trophy after being voted 'Scottish Sporting Speaker of the Year' in 2001. Lawrence Gahagan
Lawrence Gahagan or Geoghegan (1735–1820) was an 18th/19th century Irish-born sculptor. He specialised in small bronze portrait busts. Life Gahagan was born Lawrence Geoghegan in Dublin in 1735 probably into a family of stonemasons. He attended the Dublin Society School and won their "premium" (cash prize) in 1756 for a statuette of Rubens. Around 1757 he left Ireland and sailed to London where he changed his name to Gahagan. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1798 to 1817. He lived, worked and died in Westminster. Sebastian Gahagan
Sebastian Gahagan (1779 – 2 March 1838) was a sculptor of Irish descent active in London. His most notable works are the monument to Sir Thomas Picton in St Paul's Cathedral, and a statue of the Duke of Kent in Park Crescent, London, Park Crescent, Portland Place. He was also employed by Joseph Nollekens, carrying out the carving of many of his major works. Life Gahagan was born in Westminster in 1779, the son of the Irish-born sculptor Lawrence Gahagan; his brothers were Charles (born c.1765), Lucius (1773-1855) and Vincent Gahagan, Vincent (1776-1832). He is said to have been born in Dublin, although his father seems to have settled London about 20 years before his birth. The Gahagan Mounds Site ( 16RR1) is an Early Caddoan Mississippian culture archaeological site in Red River Parish, Louisiana. It is located in the Red River Valley. The site is famous for the three shaft burials and exotic grave goods excavated there in the early twentieth century. Site description The Gahagan Site is located on the western side of the Red River, about halfway between Natchitoches and Shreveport. It was once located on an old river channel, but much of the site has been destroyed by the meandering of the river. The site was occupied between 900 and 1200 CE. It consisted of a platform mound, a cone shaped burial mound, and a habitation area surrounding a centrally located plaza, with another small mound located about a quarter mile away.
